Faith No More...

I always thought their best metal moment was midway through Just a Man.

But their best metal song is probably this one:

Cuckoo for Caca

or this one:

The Gentle Art of Making Enemies

I miss those magnificent bastards.

(Not a metal band though.)

Justin, Justin, Justin - whatever shall I do with you to make you see the light?

For your Sabbthy fix, early Cathedral and the first Solitude Aeturnus album.

For real metal, check out the UkKs The Axis Of Perdition, early Gorgoroth, Aura Noir, the entire Bathory catalogue, old-school bands like Vulcano, Sarcofago, Possessed, et al.

PS - Needle. Always.

I've been searching around for stuff by Doom Metal band Pentagram, but actually came across a Turkish Metal band called Mezarkabul (which is Pentagram in Turkish). They're f-ing amazing.

Check out songs on the Anatolia album. They sing in Turkish and English. Truly exceptional.

I hate to even mention this band because my tastes have moved so far away from them, and they're not exactly obscure, but Slipknot's self titled album completely defined a period of my life.

"Spit It Out" was my favorite, in fact it's the only song by them I still have in regular rotation.

hey, this is a fun discussion.

If I may: I don't usually listen to Cradle of Filth, but this song really blew me away (it's not a very typical CoF song). Starts out slow and builds up.

Also, "Worm in a Dog's Heart" by Dog Fashion Disco (now defunct). It's got a pretty amazing keyboard bit. They were a fun, circus-y, morbid metal band.

To contribute to the earlier conversation, I might say that Faith No More is metal by association, or maybe honorary metal. I mean, I don't quite think it's completely accurate just to say they were a rock band. It's a hard call to make, 'cause they're sitting on the boundary.

Regarding Fantomas: the self-titled album and "Suspended Animation" do feature a LOT of metal drums and heavy, distorted guitar. Again, one can't really say what kind of metal that they are: they may be an experimental band that just happens to use a lot of metal elements. I guess it depends on if you're being inclusive or exclusive in your definitions.

I would tend to think that Aphex Twin's "Come to Daddy" or Prodigy's "Breathe" would be valid contributions to the discussion, because while not made by metal bands, they definitely feel metal. Especially the scary videos. (A couple of years ago, for Halloween, Yahoo music had the 10 scariest videos of all time, "Come to Daddy" was #1, surrounded by Ozzy and Cradle of Filth , etc. That's pretty metal.)
