I assume you are at least a black belt and could easily eyelash me into unconsiousness. Geezer? I think my gal would contest that. I distinctly remember her bell ringin' at least four times last night. Technique compensates quite nicely for lack of experience or declining stamina. I have neither. She could have ANY 20 year old she chose to, But she hangs around this ole' geezer. Wonder why? I'd give you her number, but that would be rude. However, no need to call me to "give me some love" I'm ALWAYS in the recharge mode, if you get my drift. Feeling pain through the keyboard and waiting by the phone.................................... |
You make one hell of a cultural ambassador. It's unusual none of the other Americans in this thread have distanced themselves from you. |

I give an honest answer to an honest question and I get threatened. Is this acceptable to Americans? |

Of course not. But I wouldn't take him as a representation of Americans so much as a global representation of losers with anger management problems. There's plenty of them in every country. |

I know they exist everywhere, and we have a larger than normal share of them teaching English in Korea. I also know that freak accidents happen in every country, not just the US. Also that what Detroit or Cincinnati might consider a healthy happy community, Torontonians or Edmontonians might consider Hell on Earth.
In my opinion, free speech means shutting retards like that up so that everyone else can talk freely. It's possible to disagree with someone and still be cordial. |

Come on, you know as well as I, that that would not be free speech. Just ignore the idiots. They have as much right to spout off their crap as anyone else, but you have to filter it. Just ignore him. |

I call B****** on that claim.
If you get killed in the US, you usually had it coming, did something really stupid, or got caught up in the wrong crowd who are "up to no good". Tell your "friends" to stop dealing dope or being jerk offs. If they're skinheads, tell them we just assume they're neo-nazi.
Most of the stereotypical "violent" crime is highly isolated in easy to avoid areas(drug dealing). I have plenty of family who live in such areas and it's not like it's a constant barrage of gunfire and cop sirens. I don't feel any danger walking down the street there...
Skinheads in the US are different than Europe....very little variety....they're all considered Neo-Nazi's here....blame the Neo Nazi's for that. |
This isn't a skinhead thing. Also, I know tons of skinheads of all colours living in America who get relatively little hassle for who they are.
Anyway, here's the guy I know who wanted to cross the world on his bike. He was killed by a distracted elderly man whose car drifted into the shoulder.

And here's the one about the straight-edge band who lost two members to a drunk driver. I hope I don't need to point out the irony in that. To be honest I didn't like these guys when they were alive, but they were just struck and killed by some drunk redneck. They never drank or did drugs. They were just driving to their next gig.

car accidents happen anywhere. You think you're any more safe driving in Canada or South Korea?? Give me a break.
Wasn't your whole premise how violent america was? how do traffic fatalities connect with that?? |

It's obviously just my own individual experiences. The only people I know who who died at roughly my age, all died while visiting the US. Anyway, I'm explaining rather than justifying. It does seem like a superstition, but it's one explanation for why some people would think that way.
By the way, I have tons of American friends in this country, way more than Canadian friends. |

If I were to drive south into the US (it would probably take about six hours for me, by the way), I'd end up in Montana. Not really a nice place to go. We've even had budding KKK communities in the southern region of my province forcing their way in from the US. |
I know this isn't what you intended, but your statements above pretty much prove the cultural misunderstanding that someone from Canada has about the US.
I lived in Bozeman, MT for a year. Montana has some of the nicest, most open minded, fun people in the world. Yes, they have their fringe nutjobs (I worked for one), but for the most part they are very nice people. Montana has some very large liberal arts universities, and as you'll find in any place that has 20,000 students, many of their views are very progressive and liberal.
Unfortunately, the only thing people outside the US hear about are the nuts with guns who want to create their own government. If you spent any significant amount of time in Bozeman or Missoula, or even certain parts of Billings, you would find that your CNN/Fox News/CBC version of Montana is very very different than the reality. |
Moving to Montana soon gonna be a dental floss tycoon |

Part of the PR problem for the U.S. is that it is just so big, and has such a concentration of media that gets disseminated around the world.
If you have a sensational incident now and then, foreigners tend to extrapolate this one in 300 million people event to the rest of the country.
Sure, there are problems that happen all too often, such as shooting rampages. But they are not limited to the United States. The only way to compare the rates to other countries is through statistics that standardize the rate to the population. The U.S. would probably still have a higher per capita rate of shooting rampages and other killings with guns than comparable countries. But for a lot of other problems, there might not be so much difference.
But my point is that isolated events tend to get examined under a worldwide magnifying glass.
It's surprising to look at foreign media and see how much American news gets covered. It is almost like America is a running soap opera for the amusement of the rest of the world. You might say it's like "The Truman Show" does America. |

Oh yeah, I meant Montana. M States.
Looking at Montana on Wikipedia, it looks sort of like Alberta without any major urban centers. |
Try, Alberta without any people. Alberta has 3.5 million people and Montana has 1 million people, mostly in the mountainous west. Most of Alberta's people are on the plains in the Calgary-Edmonton corridor, and a gridwork of towns across the rest. A relatively few are along the western mountain border area of Jasper, Banff and the Kananaskis. But head south, and that's where you'll find the most Montanans, and we're talkin some of the nicest, finest people in the entire United States, and some of the prettiest country.
Want to get a better idea of what an area is like? Try Google Earth. Go to Glacier National Park in Montana and fly around the mountains and valleys for awhile. Heck, you can go anywhere you want in the U.S., Canada, or just about anywhere but the South Pole.
As to the other M states:
Minnesota's pretty nice. If you are Korean, you will feel right at home:
http://www.americaslibrary.gov/cgi-bin/page.cgi/es/mn/spam_1
Massachusetts is cool. Especially western Mass.
Missouri has some nice riverfront property. Home of Mark Twain, you know.
Speaking of the Mississippi River, there's also Mississippi the state. Gets points for "Most Improved." 'Nuff said. Liberals can visit there safely now.
Maryland has some nice weather and crab cakes.
And Maine still has lobster, I think. And a lot more people than you would think. Betcha don't know the capital of Maine!
If you can't keep the states straight without a program, try these websites:
