I see some stuff on city-data.com on Atlanta and Miami...seems like a lot of Southern Floridians want to get out of the Miami area and choose Atlanta...but equally quite a few of them end up back in Miami.

Seems like they miss the ocean in Atlanta...but Atlanta attracts them because of a lower cost-of-living than Miami (or that seems to be what they say the most).

I don't know...but I talked to friends (since then) who have spent a lot of time in Miami and they said drugs are pretty much everywhere. (They don't do drugs and that was why they ended up leaving.)
In Atlanta, there's drugs, but the locals are more known for sex parties than cocaine parties.
Just saying...not being offensive but those seem to be the complaints of the local residents..in Miami you'll see someone next to you snorting coke, in Atl if you keep your blinds open you may accidently glimpse your neighbor's swinging party.
Drugs really decrease the libido and I heard it is hard to get laid down in FL. In ATL there are a lot more drug free people so they really tear the mother up.
Hell no I am not trolling just stating the facts! Twisted Evil

Sorry to triple post (well, maybe not) but Tiger Beer how is Japan? What city are you in? Do you like it? I may go back there next time and not to Korea. (Nothing against Korea just Japan blew my mind!) There is a huge base of Japana-freaks where I live now currently...there's nothing to do here so we all have wetdreams of Atlanta and Japan.
Someone brighten my day with some stories Smile
I spent six months in Osaka and I tell people it's like Los Angeles but everyone is/speaks Japanese. And I mean that as a compliment to both cities...

I was brought to Florida 30 years ago, by my parents. This move was from Washington State. I was a culture shock I didn't think would exist, in America. The schools were way behind the schools, in Washington; the southern drawal was difficult to understand; the flying cock roaches were horrible and there didn't seem to be many peers with high goals. I am white and my peers were not permitted to watch programs that included black people. The "N" word for black people was a part of speech. The humidity was and still is horrible. By the time a person is dressed and for women, put on makeup; and walks outside the door, it's time for another shower, the sweating is so bad. Then there's the backward southern government and law enforcement. My goal is still, to leave this state and never look back. Very Happy [color=blue]

Oh wow, you too huh? Isn't it funny how everyone here is either here because they are young and someone dragged them here, or here because they get stuck. (I live not far from you.) Some people get stuck due to drug problems (and I mean that in the sincerest possible way, no looking down on anybody even though I do joke around sometimes) AND/OR general health problems (young or old), some people get stuck here due to family or friend drama and they are trying to stay sober due to the insanity (taking care of an elderly aunt, taking care of a friend with addiction problems), and some people get stuck due to a bad-ass financial situation. Usually one of the three reasons, though people with only the third are usually lucky enough to land in South Georgia a little bit further away from the border (kind of like El Paso but on GA time.) Mine was a mix of the second and the third reasons, what's yours?

*I swear someone should start a charity devoted to getting people out of FL...there are people who honestly get trapped in or near there (South GA too)...and I'm only half-joking about that!*

Just4you, if you spent six months in Osaka, you certainly spent your time in the best city! I love OSAKA. My favorite city in Japan by far. I live north of Tokyo about 3-5 hours (depending), in a smallish small city in Northern Honshu. It snowed for three days earlier in the week.

Japan is incredibly comfortable, and after being here, even in this tiny town, I really like this country quite a bit. Seoul was more fun than where I'm currently at, but I hope to be in Osaka or around Tokyo in the future. I'd say I prefer Osaka first and foremost, than Seoul shortly behind Osaka, then Tokyo as a third. For countries though, Japan feels easily long-term, whereas Korea always felt like I needed breaks from it.

FLORIDA/TEXAS/GEORGIA: Wink

I've never been to Jacksonville or Atlanta...but your description of Atlanta sounds MUCH better than Miami. Sex over drugs is an easy choice!

JAX doesn't seem like much of a city though, does it? To me, it seems like just a condensed sloppy unplanned mess of an area that accumulated a lot of car-oriented people. Crime-stats often put JAX worse than MIA which is a mystery, plus just...ahm, I don't know, never seemed like a real consideration for living. I'd think for your location, ATL would offer the more world-class attributes. (Not advocated ATL, as I don't know the city, but just general feeling).

Southern Florida...I did drive around in there, and Miami itself wasn't anything special. I did like Boward County, Fort Lauderdale quite a bit though. Actually what I personanlly really like about Florida is all of the many beach condos everywhere. It seems to be what most people complain about with Florida, but I find it very attractive and urban/beach or something.

TAMPA....well, Clearwater or Sarasota looked alright. Probably go stir-crazy in one of those places though. But beach areas and near Tampa, which isn't a very good city, but at least a city nontheless.

TEXAS...I've driven around that state, and not sure if its similar to GA/FL or not, it seems to have a different kind of culture to it...cowboy feel in places plus Tex-Mex...but maybe among their politics, it might have a similar GA/no.FL feel to it.

----

Very interesting reading about Florida on here though...

Well Tiger Beer, It is cool that you are having fun in Japan. Smile
Another difference btwn FL and GA (and this may be the main difference, hell if I know?!?) but FL seems to be much more gay friendly. I'm not saying that a slur or a political statement for or against but that is one thing I have noticed with people from FL and GA. Maybe that is part of the red state/blue state thing, I have no idea. But in GA outside the border towns gay people may have more of a difficult time than they would in FL.
There are drugs in Atl too but the further down in FL you get the more and more widespread it is.
Well at any rate the US is nice, yes yes. I can openly make fun of the things about my country that suck, while praising the good points. And I'm not ultra conformist so I feel much more free to express myself here (although in GA outside of ATL that is iffy...I tend to hang out with ATL people though so I don't know...also lots and lots of Floridians where I live here, as well, during the day so my area is different than the rest of small town GA.)
Osaka also had much more of a non conformist/international feel which is why I compared it to LA.
And for all the drama, it does tend to make people close like I said.
So it all has its ups and downs.

ANYONE have any comments on CLEARWATER, FLORIDA or FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA?

I visited those two areas among many areas, and they seemed most interesting to me for potential living, if I were to live in Florida someday. Anyone have comments on them?

The $10,000,000 HUMIDITY QUESTION:

Is Florida any more humid than say, Southeast Asia?

It sounds like FLORIDA has ideal weather during the winter months, and basically Thailand/Philippines/Malaysia/Indonesia weather during the summer months? IF that is the case, that isn't too bad!

SE Asia weather for 5 months vs. SNOW/WINTER for 5 months...than FL sounds REAL nice.

Tiger Beer I don't know about SE Asia seeing as I've never been there, but I did (very briefly) sujourn to Taiwan, and Taiwan was much, much, much, much worse than FL regarding heat and humidity issues.
Indeed. Mad

And another thing, people in this part of the US can be really, really outgoing.

Sometimes all I can do is stand back and watch.

Shocked

Of those choices, I'd go with Clearwater. While you'd have to probably commute to Tampa for work, it's got nice beaches and isn't completely overrun with people. Plus, you've got St. Pete just down the road.

Clearwater doesn't get that many hurricanes either.

On the question of humidity, I don't know about the comparison to SEA. But the closer you are to the ocean, the less humidity you'll experience. Florida in August is monsooon. It rains incessantly every day. Showers are frequent. But Tampa/St. Pete/ Clearwater have the best thunderstorms I've seen anywhere in Floriday. Best I've ever seen anywhere.

Not even close. SE Asia, and here I'm referencing mostly Singapore, is humid all the time.

I lived in FL for two years and you can literally go swimming at the beach from April-October comfortably no matter who you are. Canadians can go all year. From November-March you don't need the beach because the weather is the very definition of "perfect" that time of year. Miss those FL "winters"!

The beach culture of FL is VERY different to inner-FL. The interior of FL is very very redneck. In all those small towns, you'll find the same rebel flag toting masses you'd find in any small southern town. Definitely didn't expect that upon moving there!

Hands down the coolest part of FL??
The Everglades. (Where else can you eat alligator and do a 90 mile canoo track?)
