And another point..
the bottom of N.Z (which is waaay closer to Antarctica than Australia) is fking freezing for the most part.
And even if someone can't spell 'Antarctica', at least he can probably pronounce it. FYI Americans (and possibly some Canadians) - Antarctica is NOT pronounced 'ANARtica.' Fck, that drives me insane.. there is a 'T' in there people!! |

To apply a little ice to this heated article:
| U.S. Geological Survey wrote: |
| Despite its size, Antactica ranks below all other regions in number of dated eruptions, and only the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean regions have fewer historically active volcanoes. It's historical record is brief, and 75 percent of its eruptions are from this century. Precise dating of past eruptions is difficult -- much of the landscape is glacier-covered, travel is daunting, and the wood needed for radiocarbon dating does not grow in this extreme climate -- and the region has the highest proportion of volcanoes with uncertain status. |
So it has less volcanic activity than most other places.
The reason that southern Africa, Australia and New Zealand are much warmer than most places of the same latitude on the Eurasian land mass and north American landmass is simple. The aforementioned southern land's winter winds come from the southwest, over unfrozen ocean, making them warmer, compared to those coming from the northwest for the aforementioned northern land's winter winds, which come from frozen tundra, which is fucking cold.

Have a closer look at some of the replies here.

QFT. Only an idiot would judge an entire nation or race on the actions of one. |

Someone seriously argued that for the length of this thread. |

First of all, thanks for the spelling tip Hapki. Even Forrest Gump could spell. Doesn't say much for me, but at the same time doesn't make you not a dimwit.
Back to the replies. Sadly, I'm not making anything up. Yeah, i was pretty amazed that a university graduate could be so.... well... i'll be nice and say 'ignorant'.
Oh, and have i said that ALL americans are idiots??? In fact have I actually criticised the american people? As i said previously, i have even met a few of 'em who were decent humans.
Standing by my criticism of the american education system however. At least in regards to the part of the curriculum dealing with... anything... outside of US territory. |

| any sample of sufficent size to make conclusions from, should have intelligence on a normal distrubution. A skewed demographic, such as ESL teachers in Korea, is only proof that ESL teachers in Korea are a skewed demographic, and only conclusions concerning ESL teachers in Korea can be drawn from such data. |

That's what I keep telling the Koreans. Too bad the "Westerners" don't even have enough common sence to understand that. |

Perhaps we are witnessing an immature reaction to some deep-seated feelings of love and infatuation. This is quite similar to an elementary school episode where a little boy has a crush on the girl sitting in front of him.
In private, he fantasizes and day-dreams of being an important part of her life, being that "boy" that can laugh and play with her in the school yard. Publicly though, he scrutinizes her, pulling at her hair and calling her funny names in front of the rest of the class; in fact, he looks for ANY flaw that she may have and exploits any chance he has to hurt her feelings...just so she will notice him.
Or, and what might be a more realistic analogy for this situation, is the scrawny bitch-boy that always felt inferior to the ever so popular jocks that got all the girls, whispering spineless insults into the ears of his other D&D counterparts. |

Just for kicks I'd like to point out (and I wouldn't normally do this except as a response to the OP and his unhealthy anti-American fascination)-
Opened in 1956, McMurdo Station is Antarctica's largest community and a functional, modern day science station. It is the center of scientific and logistic operations for all of Antarctica.
The Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, opened in 1957, is the only research facility at the South Pole.
Both run by America.
So there is a good chance that everything you DO know about Antarctica, you learned from an American. |

Ah, but a far more interesting question:
What is under the ice in Antarctica? As I learned in geography class (Annapolis, Maryland USA), there are only 3 unexplored regions on Earth:
1) Sentinal island, India- the natives kill anyone who approaches- taking down helicopters with bows, seriously.
2) The oceans
3) Under the ice. Who knows, perhaps under that ice is a really warm place where there are hot penguin babes. |

| Yeah, it's crazy to think we have a better understanding of the moon's surface than our own (including under water). |
