| The Aussie teacher's Korean was meant to be a running joke, and it makes her look like a clown. In class she always addresses her adult students in "ban mal"(informal Korean), a social faux pas that also makes her sound like a child. |
I must disagree.
Children do not (or seldom) use "ban mal" when speaking to adults (parents being an exception). So she didn't in my view look like a child.
However, she did seem pretty "rude" because using "ban mal" when first meeting people is faux pas.
But, I must point out that she is the TEACHER, and every TEACHER I have ever known has ALWAYS used "ban mal" when addressing or speaking to students, adults or not.

| The pizza delivery guy tries to give her a quick fix, telling her to add "yo" to the end of all her sentences so she can stop sounding so rude. Unfortunately, he has a regional accent (Chungcheon Province, I think), so he actually ends up telling her to add "you". The teacher ends up saying things like "annyeonghase-you" "saranghae-you", etc. making things even worse. |
It was done intentionally methinks.

| I found myself cringing every time she opened her mouth in Korean, and hearing the Korean audience laugh. It reminded me of Hollywood Asian stereotypes a la "Charlie Chan", and "Me so horny", as well as the rude responses that all too many Koreans show to foreigners trying to learn their language. |
Well, when speaking to non-students, yes it seemed a bit odd that she had learned Korean quite well but did not use the honnorifics when needed outside of the school. |

It was. I was watching this movie with a korean girl who thought that it was the funniest thing in the world -- hearing a foreigner speaking korean AND using a regional accent. She was ready to start her own internet fan club in praise of that Aussie broad. Since I speak 10 korean words - it was brale to me.
I thought the movie was actually not too bad - had some funny moments. I'm just sick of the fact that there is no such thing as a korean comedy here -- everything HAS to be a romantic comedy. In everyone i've seen, at some point the story screeches to a halt ushering in a drawn-out, sobbing, gay romantic drama.
I saw the "comedy" "Sex is Zero" last year and by the time all was said and done my ass was burning not only from the rock hard DVD Bong couch but from the fact that I felt molested and raped by the movie. The movie began by trumping American Pie for all out lewdness (a guy masturbating in a frying pan & his friend then eats it on a bun) when suddenly, out of nowhere, the movie takes a hard left and all the characters spend 30 minutes crying and sobbing. I'm off korean comedies for life!! That gay sh*t needs to stop. |
