Fact is though that IS how it is percieved in korean culture. He atoned for his crimes and took responsibility...by commiting suicide. That is the view in this country.

Thats a bit harsh I think considering he was a human rights lawyer defending the disadvantaged in society...

Korean law has always been flexible and open to the differing interpretations of whoever wields power.
"Law" in Asia does not have the same rigid meaning as it does in the west. |

What I find a little nauseous these days is the mass group emotionalism. A sort of media-driven phenomenon whereby the enitire population bonds together over the TV screen. Same with the UK and Princess Dianas funeral. It becomes a sort of abnormal socially acceptable emotional release for the nation to go into grief over someone they never knew personally, whose persona is tinted and sensationalised by media presentation.
Such a national catharsis is to me symptomatic of an ill society with deeper issues. Its simply not possible for a human to go into deep grief over another human that they never had any contact with. What they are in fact doing is expressing a national sadness with issues in their society as a whole. Perhaps its just a rare group hug from a people that usually do not allow themselves expression. |
