I'm guessing you haven't installed a video codecs pack. Try searching for Ace Mega codecs pack on the net. It sorted out everything for me.

Yep probably. try www.divx.com and download their codec. It is the most widely used one.

I'm also curious what mac users do, besides show off about how "pretty" their OS is

Download the bit-torrent software that pops up...then you can download to your heart's content...
