I don't want to keep reiterating the same argument and I'm kind of tired of this thread except for finding out what happens next. I'll just say that while I don't think being drunk is an excuse the shopkeeper's reaction was really over the line.
The OP has already faced the consequences for this so I think people should lay off a bit. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes. |
So the OP's mistake is alright and understandable but the shopkeeper's was over the line?
But for the OP's actions this incident does not take place. His actions were both offensive and illegal. Even if both are at fault to a degree, the OP is more at fault because his actions precipitated the whole event.
Enough preaching, bring on the juicy details! |

| Maybe you've been listening to LaToya Jackson too much. Why don't you read the original post again. He said the shopkeeper was beating him and left a scar. The police then arrested the OP but that wasn't enough for the guy. He got a goon squad to try to prevent him from leaving the station. He then goes on to try and extort money from him. What the OP did was wrong but it doesn't justify that kind of reaction. |

Good, throw the book at both of them. Both were over the line, both were morons. |

I feel bad for the guy, too. But you can't go to another country and just expect to be treated exactly the same as if you were back in your own home/country.
I would be pissed if I had to work at one of those annoying vendors where nearly everyone is drunk and there's vomit and piss everywhere. And THEN I have to deal with some entitled drunk kid taking stuff of my cart, while his buddy throws more of my stuff around.
No, the OP didn't throw stuff, and he's probably a good-natured fellow. But at the same time, he was in the wrong. |

I smell the Towel Slapper's MO on this one. Idiotic behavior perceived of as innocent; Cops; Korean Friend; Lawsuit; etc.
It's been a couple months, time for it to resurface. |
That's exactly what I was thinking! Who is this guy? Good writer. He should put his talents to better use and work on a novel and stop posting stupid crap on ESL cafe.
You just know some newbies are reading this crap and getting the sh*t scared out of them...1 day before getting on the plane, "Oh god, what have I gotten myself into!"
So be nice, OP. |
Question: Are you saying I am the guy that posted that thing about the towel situation? If so, you are wrong. I would never smack anyone with a towel in the shower, even if they were my friend. That's not my style and my mind doesn't work in the way that I could create something in that vein. If you are not satying that and you are saying that I am a good writer from what I posted, then thank you. Even though I felt that my story was confused and poorly written, I still give you my thanks if that was your intention. Regardless, I haven't checked this thing since I posted my story months ago. Update: I'm still here. |

| I've been arrested twice and have had to go in for financial disputes on at least 2 other occasions. One of those times they told me that I had to pay 100,000 won or spend the night in jail. Just on the word of the other (Korean) person (woman). What a crock. Everytime I've been in the police station it had to do with a dispute/fight with Koreans and they always take the side of the Koreans. |

| Sounds like a story that could happen to anybody. Or at least anybody i know. So, OP, did you make them cease and desist or stand and deliver? |

I have since renewed my visa so that I could teach for an extra month at my current job. The visa ends April 21st. I am going to do a bit of traveling but am planning on coming back in August.
Looking back on it, I am pretty sure that the "shop keeper" was very drunk and because, one, my korean friend said that he reeked of soju, and, two, when the "shop keeper" was chasing me around outside the police station, the police officers just snickered at the man's actions.
That said, hopefully I'll be back soon. |

Beware: theft, even petty theft of minor objects.. is regarded as a worse crime than rape in this country. They used to knock peoples toes off for it, beat them on the soles of their feet..
Corporate theft and embezzlement, though, is much more acceptable. |

This story is fantastic. He steals a teddy bear from a one-legged man, but its O.K. ...
BECAUSE IT WAS CHRISTMAS
the old christmas defense, classic. (btw, if a one legged man breaks his fake leg trying to recover stolen goods from you, drunk or not, it is your fault. you are lucky you got away with this. it was truly a christmas miracle.) |

Hey Paper. How about the replacements? Are they going to stop you from supporting your family too? What will happen when there are more Indian teachers than both European & North American? Please post on every individual instance when someone new or old comes to SK to make life easier or harder for you. Curious.

I just pretty much had the exact same thing happen because a shopkeeper claimed I stole her dog.
Her dog dashed out of the store when I opened the door. When I got outside, I scooped it up and turned around to put it back in. At that point, the insanity set in.
Five hours later and probably seventeen policemen later, I paid up and gave some elaborate apology so I could get OUT of the police station. 100,000 won is well worth sleeping in my own bed tonight, not getting deported and not having to deal with this anymore. Here's hoping it's actually gone. They do, after all, have my finger prints. And my director's number.
So, dude, my sympathies. What you did may not have been perfect, as everyone else has been so willing to point out, but I'm still pretty sure the police here suck. |
