[quote="Bulsajo"]I couldn't find the Molvanian Idol link at that website (or did you really mean MOLDAVIAN Idol?).
It's a link up in the top right hand corner, to an mp3 file:

Du'oh, right in the gold star, how could I have missed it?
Great tune, I think Mr. Cagri (The "Hello! I kiss you!" dude from Izmir) is with that band.

I use NO guidebook, that in my opinion is the best way
The best guide:
1. a big map of the country
2. a guide from the national tourist austhority(KNTO for Korea)
3. Find the tourist information booth and get all the local info there.
I've travelled all over Asia and Europe and I've done this method everywhere as it is always up to date and has the best list of hotels and places to see.
The only LP book I would recommend is Japan, however wrote that one did a good job(travelled Japan for 2 months adn have been in and out 20 times).
I'll admit LP is good for background info but why buy the book for that, go to the website at www.lonelyplanet.com and it has all that is sufficient.
Guidebooks are for the unimaginative who just want to see what everyone else does and then goes home and shares the same stories with everyone else.
Boring
Use my method and you'll discover more interesting things and its a bit more unplanned. Even the lonely planet has a quote that goes:
"We submit some of the best things to see as we don't too many tourists going there and changing or wrecking it" or something along those lines. |

Are we thinking of two different guides here? A Moon guide and a Hollym-published guide? |
Obviously I've gone and mixed up two books.
And equally obviously you've shown me the error of my ways [In my defence I coudln't find that at the last couple of bookstores I checked for it].
So how does it compare to the LP in terms of Seoul Palaces? [Better, I would imagine]
Would you be surprised if I asked what your guide says about Robert Nilson? All I can find is that he is from Minnesota- How long did he live in Korea? |

I don't have a preference either way and I certainly don't remember much of what either said. I do recall that the Moon guide seemed more "substantive", but I'm with whoever posted that these sorts of guides lose their usefulness for folks here for the long haul.
Didn't Dave Mason do the LP guide once? |

Good question I have no idea but also recall hearing something like that. Maybe it wasn't LP but another guidebook? And I know he spent a lot of time doing research for his own book on Sanshin, but I believe it's more of a coffeetable-size book than a guide.

I found LP to be half decent when it comes to maps and a few basics, but not much else. The Korean addition is the worst Ive seen. Ulsan is not even included. OK, so its a pretty boring place that I often feel doesnt deserve mention, but come on. Its the largest city (area wise) in the country.
When I lived in the Philippines, I found LP to be more useful. But dont trust it for prices. The LP crew obviously got ripped off left right and center, and then reported prices they paid as standard – which made me think of them as newbe tourists on a big budget rather than experienced travelers, |

Mmmmm the LP guide is great........as long as you live in Seoul. Don't get me started. I have used the guide in about 16 countries aand in my humble opinion the Koran one is one of the worst. Seoul....Seoul....Seoul....blah blah. I'm not sure the writers ever left the capital.
Apparently it ain't too good for Seoul either.

I don't usually recommend killing a thread, and maybe all I need is the op to change the thread title, but...
Man, do I miss eating a great big turkey dinner with all the fixings.
Every bloody time I see the thread title.
It's just too much. |

It sucks?
But that's relative- It sucks compared to what?
The Moon guide?
Fine, but that would still place it second over
Fodor's Korea (last updated in 1993),
Frommer's Korea (doesn't exist- a glaring absence in their Asia series),
Let's Go Korea (32 pages, last updated in 1985)...
Hey, I just noticed there is a 5th edition LP SEOUL guide by Martin Robinson, so I guess it is pointless to argue about Robert Storey's suitability as author at least as far as Seoul is concerned.
And finally, we have been arguing over different books aimed at tourists and short visit travellers...
I just came across a book I had never heard of before; One which would be much more useful to most of the people on this forum and consequently much more appropriate to evaluate- has anyone read it?
I wonder how it compares to- Culture Shock: Korea, for example? |
