Oh I just meant cheerleading in the sense that they would only cheer on the guys competing. Pick some pretty girls and everything is great.

Is the battle to stop underage drinking something of a crusade in the USA? I certainly get that impression from degrassi-esque coming of age shows, but it can't all be like it is on tv?

Degrassi is a Canadian show Laughing

And yeah, it's a crusade on this side of the border as well. We have degrassi-esque coming of age shows as well but they aren't quite as popular as Degrassi ______ (insert physical location relevant to teenagers). Shocked

I was being unclear. I meant your shows that are like our degrassi (I know it's canadian. I can't wait until you guys get into 'the littlest hobo' or 'danger bay'). And I have no idea what the new degrassi is like (probably sucks) but the old one covered every issue. Kids on acid were jumping off bridges, parents were dying, if you had sex you were probably going to get pregnant or get aids, there were teenaged mothers and abortions and racism and sexism and pedophilia and sexual harrasment and anorexia and bullies and suicide and finding dead bodies and abusive boyfriends and terrorist (yes, a couple of them were little lefty vandals!) and The Zit Remedy. American shows just don't cover as much stuff, and you do less stuff with way more flair. Those poor Degrassi kids got away with nothing.

I am still being unclear, but I was distracted by how much stuff was in degrassi. This is debatable, but my impression is underaged drinking isn't a huge deal if it is relatively private and adults are around and the kids are seventeen and up.

And in the movie, Katlin shows boobage. It's pretty disturbing.

Centre ice at GM place = not relatively private.

They acted immature, they apologized. Nothing sexist here.

If the real hockey players had acted silly at centre ice after Sunday's big win, they would have apologized too.

Oh snap!

On a more reflective note, doesn't embedding sexist notions about male hockey being the "real" thing kind of defeat the purpose of a post meant to attack the idea that there's a double standard for women in sports? I mean, even if you're right and women's hockey is a joke (once again, I wouldn't know because sports in general are beneath me), that's probably the kind of point you don't want to make in tandem with the "there's no double standard" claim.

I was in Canada when all this happened. The Canadian media didn't really care beyond reporting that it took place. It was the American and British media that picked it up and seemed outraged. Americans seemed to start screaming about underage drinking before realizing that Canada has its own laws regarding those things and isn't so hysterical about such manners. The IOC had to pretend that they cared for about 2 hours, then announced the case was closed once the Canadian team said they should have used more discretion. Now it seems the story lives on by those who say it shouldn't be a story. Just let it go.

Much ado about nothing.

Edited.

And just for the record, my mistake was in not deleting abox's quote box, not in thinking abox wrote it (meaning my response still makes sense as it is now).

Yes, they won.

Yes, they should be allowed to do what they want.

Yes, they're women.

...barely.

The fans were already out of the stadium. Case closed.

And they deserved to have some fun. They blew the competition away.

Fortunately, we Americans have learned to discern the difference between our fellow normals and the soulless doppelgangers from the North.
