I liked reading this, as ego masturbation is a hobby of mine. However, I just don't agree with the fundamental premise of this article.
Why? Well, the awesome thing about being a progressive is that it is our mission to grab the undeveloped screaming infants of the right by the hair and drag them into the blinding light of reason.
We can't do that by using the same underhanded bullshit that they use every fucking day. We need to show them that we are better than they are and we need to be ideologically sound in order to do so, because even the slightest bit of hypocrisy will send them into screaming priapic fits, decrying everything we've accomplished as suspect.
You can't become a monster in order to defeat a monster and still expect the people to love you, after all.
Yeah, it's nice that we won for once, but this is no time for gloating. We've got civilization to catch up to. |

I hold very liberal views and I watch Maher's show pretty much every week. I love his New Rules, and I like watching smart people debate - it's so rare that you actually get to see it happen.
I think his familiarity with black guests can be a bit OTT. Maybe they know that he is absolutely not racist, so he gets away with it, in the same way gay guys can get away with saying sexy things to women without coming off as horny sleazebags. Just a theory.
As much as I like the show, a few things annoy me:
last year, he was always going on about milk, and it's potential dangers for humans. Any chance he got.
There aren't enough REpublican / right-wing guests. He needs to have 2 right-wingers to even out the sides. Too often the right-winger gets shouted down, and I'd prefer to see people win a FAIR fight.
Sometimes he advocates an agenda like it's the most important thing in the world, but it's generally something topical or he doesn't know enough about it, which makes me think he heard it at a party that week and looked it up on Wikipedia. I could be wrong, but he comes off that way sometimes.
All in all a good show, and I'd watch the equivalent right-wing show too if there was one. |

Usually one or two guys uplaod the most recent Bill Maher Real Time episodes sometime on the weekend (after the original Friday night broadcast). The best quality one is Tullycaster
Go on YouTube on Sunday (Korea time) and after searching for Bill Maher, go into the search options menu and choose sort "by upload date". You should find someone that has uploaded the latest episode of RTWBM.. But don't wait too long after that because the powers that be remove the videos. |

a useful quality for someone in his position.
he doesn't aim to be loved, he aims to be watched, whether on TV or on a comedy tour (or read, as he's put out several books).
typically such people strive for the biggest 'assdom' possible, especially so on the other end of the political spectrum - see Limbaugh, Coulter, et al. |

Agreed. Many comedians are thoroughly unlikeable as people, but it's that in-your-face attitude that also makes them attractive. They say a lot of things we WISH we could say particularly non-PC things.
Bill Maher has that audience because they sit there at home and say to themselves "I think that too, but if I said that in public, I'd get pounced on." |

| The more I watch his stuff, the more I like him. He's not just smart and funny; he has a point too. And he's not afraid to get booed. As he said himself, "we need more of that in this country". It's better to have principles and speak your mind even when it doesn't go over well, than be a conformist. |
