I just watched [REC] right now and it scared the you-know-what out of me.

Excellently done.

I've been trying to catch up on horror movies released in recent years, so watched Let the Right One in and The Descent. The former, I thought, was simply awful. It was at least 30 minutes too long and basically the biggest load of crap I've seen for some time. The Descent, however, was distinctly better, but gets tedious in the second half, after the cave-dwelling creatures' existence has been established - the frights become very predictable.

^ I strongly disagree with your assessment of Let The Right One In.

I'm about to watch The Human Centipede tonight. Very Happy

The fact that these underground creatures are adapted to live underground, yet have to go to the surface to feed is the one of the most ridiculous premises I've ever seen in a horror movie. EPIC FAIL in my book.

One movie that flew below the radar yet I thought was awesome, along with several critics (RT 85%) was 2006's Slither. Very campy and tongue in cheek, but with some awesome death sequences.

Human Centipede trailer. About to watch it.

I don't believe that the creatures in the movie were supposed to be the actual part that scared you.

I'm claustrophobic and watching that movie made me uncomfortable at times.

Saw is absolute crap. I watched the first one...it sucked. Haven't even bothered with the subsequent movies. Frankly, there aren't a great deal of quality horror movies these days. Listening to my students butcher the English language on a daily basis has more horror value than anything that Hollywood puts out.

I am a big fan of horror movies but I have hard time finding ones that I really like. I'm not into torture/gore/rape or cheap scares from axe-wielding psychos unless it is part of a more elaborate plot. I have never seen the Saw movies and I don't plan on it. Any suggestions? These are some I like but I'm not sure if they all count as specifically "horror."

Psycho (the original)
The Omen (")
Alien
Aliens
The Ring
The Grudge
The Others
The Eye (original Chinese version)
The Village
A Tale of Two Sisters
The Skeleton Key
Pandorum
The Silence of the Lambs

How do you feel about zombies? The original Dawn of the Dead is a classic. Stay away from Return of the Living Dead series, but Romero Zombie movies are great. 28 days later is also a favorite of mine, as well as Sean of the Dead. And if you really get hooked on the undead, then you might like the book World War Z. Another good movie I liked was The Decent (I think thats what its called) bunch of girls go spulunking and it gets a little crazy. I was actually scared of that movie, but more because I hate caves. The Shinning is also a good one. Some people may dsagree but I also like House of a 1000 Corpses and the better sequel, The Devil's Rejects. But that might go into the torture part so maybe no go. Some great one liners though.

I second the zombie movie recommendation if you're into them - the original trio of Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead is quality.

There's a reason I didn't mention Day of the Dead, that one really is for completists only. George Romero had his funding cut off before he finished making the movie, and it really shows. I like the premise, but the acting is SO bad that I could barely finish watching it.

I'm a big zombie movie fan, so if you haven't seen them yet:

Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead (the 1973 original is better, but the 2004 remake is still fun)
28 Days Later

You should also check out Dead Snow (Nazi zombies) and Zombieland (Bill Murray as a zombie!) if you like zombie horror/comedies.

Since this threads already been derailed, we might as well take it even further off course by discussing zombie comedies. Shaun of the Dead really is the Cadillac of this subgenre, and the indie Zombie Honeymoon is definitely worth your time. I've only seen excerpts of it, but I really want to get my hands on a copy of the microbudget Stink of Flesh (tagline "How do you lead an alternative lifestyle... When everybody's dead?"), but no one ever seems to be seeding it on Bit Torrent.

Did you see Fido? That's my favorite behind Shaun of the Dead.

The Devil's Rejects was great. Zombie really put it all together for that one.

Disagree.

With the budget they were working with on the first one, it had everything you want in a good horror flick. The other ones leave something to be desired, but the original is good.

I liked 28 days later, though I will admit to turning away at the more gruesome bloody chewing scenes. I watched the sequel but didn't like it as much as the first one.

I just watched a great movie called Peacock. It's not quite horror, but not quite just drama - it has more of a Hitchcock feel to it if anyone is interested in movies like that. Cillian Murphy gives an amazing performance as John/Emma.
