Eh hipsters are annoying...but they are WAY preferable to say something
truly awful like hippies. God I hate hippies.
I came across this article. Maybe a bit much but an interesting read.
Check it out.

This is my favorite part of that article:
| Quote: |
| This obsession with "street-cred" reaches its apex of absurdity as hipsters have recently and wholeheartedly adopted the fixed-gear bike as the only acceptable form of transportation only to have brakes installed on a piece of machinery that is defined by its lack thereof. |
You see a LOT of people with fixed-gear bikes who don't know how to ride them properly, so they have breaks installed on them. It's so funny to me because they're basically admitting the obvious--that fixed-gear bikes are not that great for getting around a city.
Arguments I've heard for why people use fixed-gear bikes around cities:
1) They're lighter because they have less parts (while true, the weight difference won't even be noticeable unless you're climbing a lot of hills. Even then, it only takes off a few seconds on a 20 minute climb)
2) You don't get distracted by having to think about changing gears (if you can't change gears and ride a bike at the same time, then you're probably not coordinated enough to be riding one)
3) You can do tricks on them (legit reason)
4) They are cool and might get you laid (legit reason, although the coolness factor is reduced when you install breaks on them) |

| I suppose fixies might be a better workout as you don't get to rest like on a regular bike. They're definitely more dangerous, though. I liked having a lot of gears on my bike back home, though. Even though I only used 3 or 4, it made me feel fancy to have all those extra gears. |

Nice Minor Threat reference. That was a Minor Threat reference, right? |
Minor Threat? Who's that? I'm no elitist hipster, in my eyes at least. |

So, is not knowing who Minor Threat is an example of hipster ironic snarkiness or do you really not know? Internets make it hard to tell.
Hipsters can be a welcome change if you live in a small town. But seriously, where the Straight-Edgers at in Korea? |

Straight Edgers?
They are all like 15 years old, so they aren't here yet.
Straight Edge is a philosophy that is even more messed up and full of nonsense than the hipster scene.
If you want to be sober, sure, that's cool. But the straight edge scene is full of dogma and annoying misdirected hostility. |

I don't think a straight edge kid would last a second living in this alcohol filled peninsula. LOL the thought of a Straight Edge scene kid getting his ass handed to him by an adjosshi. |

Good one!
The article did a great job of leaving me unimpressed with the hipster crowd.
My favorite part:
| Quote: |
I ask one of the girls if her being at an art party and wearing fake eyeglasses, leggings and a flannel shirt makes her a hipster.
"Im not comfortable with that term," she replies.
Her friend adds, with just a flicker of menace in her eyes, "Yeah, I dont know, you shouldnt use that word, its just"
"Offensive?"
"No its just, well if you dont know why then you just shouldnt even use it." |
OK, I don't know why a term would make someone uncomfortable (and they can't explain it), so therefore I shouldn't use it?? |

| I think part of the reason you dislike them is because you have a word to call them. Otherwise you would be saying "I don't like those people who like stuff for the sake of being cool, or dress ironically, or listen to music that's hard to listen to, or think they're better than me..." |
Yes, I agree. I've just accepted that 75% of people, no matter where you go, will be dumb. I went to an average college and because I had long curly hair, every frat guy called me a faggot or asked if could sell them weed. Heck I got a free shot once bcuz I looked like Shaun White (I don't at all).
My friends and I would hate on the frat guys at school because they played d. dre's the chronic, wore their hats backwards and drink natty light. They're way more narrow-styled than hipsters. 100% same outfit for every single frat boy.
But back to the indie thing. -Now that dept. stores sell vintage and indie styles, the counter-culture indie wave pretty much took over and IS mainstream. that's why you see cutesy movies like 500 days of Summer coming out of Hollywood. for example, Kurt Cobain would shoot himself again if he met any of the kids wearing a Nirvana shirt today. I'm not a big Nirvana fan, but think about Nickelback's voice and Nirvana's.
Once the dumb people start liking stuff, it's over.
Personally, I've never liked the clothes in stores. I've always hated Abercrombie, American Eagle for obvious reasons. I started making my own shirts back in high school. And buying dyes and whatever. And I like vintage. retro clothes are just better designed, way better styles back then. Have you ever shopped at Wal-mart or Kohl's for men? The *Mainstream style sucks. It's skulls and motorcycles or boring sweaters.
Plain white or black T-shirts paired with good jeans is my favorite style now. it's safe and non-judgmental and good.
**What do people think about the barefoot shoe wave? I'm into it (I wear Terra Plana), but I can foresee people hating on that real soon. |

It's not about hating on someone because they are wearing a certain kind of shoes or shirt or whatever, that's just stupid. That's for high school kids.
It's all about how a person acts, and their mindset and what their ideals and philosophies are.
And these days, most hipsters are just sheep. Without strong ideals. And if they do have strong ideals, it's like they are basically blindly copying cookie-cutter liberalism or trends. Their clothes are merely an outward manifestation of their sheepish personalities and self-absorbed narcisism.
But truely, most of them are just in it for a cheap party and that's it. And I think that's why lots of people hate them. Also there is the fact that lot's of them act like snobs if you aren't as "hip" and "enlightened" as they are. They are on a high horse for sure.
Counter-culture used to be much more about ideals, philosophies, being down with something, or being part of a real movement of some kind.
Now the hipsters are just all about fashion, partying, popularity and trends. |
