Yeah, I've heard others say that season 4 was good. I just didn't like the whole bit where the white politician / mayor was around.
The Shield is pretty good too if you are into these.
Rome is good. Spartacus is another one that is real good.
Now we are all watching True Blood here in Vancouver, which is good. Don't let the vampire-theme fool you into thinking it's Twilight. It's very mature, very well written (based on novels). |

I can't believe no one has said Breaking Bad is the best show out right now.
Others on my List would be: Hung, Louie, Rescue me, everything on Discovery channel, Entourage
I got to admit I'm a little lost right now with out the mythical unicorn that was Ninja Video. |

| I know it's an oldie, but I've right now I'm into Homicide: Life on the Streets. The show was based on a book written by David Simon, who later went on to create The Wire. |

I remember the Sopranos episode when P Walnuts was being haunted. The funniest scene was when he sat in on the sance and turn around to find the "spook" and toss a chair at it
But then again I found the Wire to be much cooler on a day-to-day. Wire! |

Not to derail the discussion but I'm all into the Shield. My summer, brain off, bubble gum. For me, Wire and Sopranos are just recreational drugs, Vic and the Shield = pure crack.

At its very best, I think nothing touched The Sopranos. However, I think they fel off. It wasn't as consistently good as The Wire. The Wire was far more consistent. Even the 2nd season which everyone pans as an off season was very good.
The dream scenes when Tony was in a coma sucked. Its an opinion and others may have liked it but to me it sucked. There were times like that in The Sopranos.
So, The Wire wins it for me because of its consistency. One thing The Wire has been able to do that no other show that I can think of has done is try and make a political or socioeconomic message and still be highly entertaining. Almost always when a show does that it loses itself.
The Wire became a political mesage but very few caught it. One season the messsage was about the education system in the U.S. One season (and throughout others) it was about the political system of big city politics as well as politics in general), in the last season it was about the media.
It also had a subliminal message about the war on drugs. It became very obvious when Bunny Colvin had 'Hamsterdam'. The writers of the show were saying that the war on drugs doesn't work, legalize it and we can end the violence (to a large degree) that is associated with it as well as better administer help to the addicts and the associate problems of drugs in America.
To marry political messages and entertainment like thaton a consistent basis is unpecedented.
A few of The Sopranos characters were or became unlikeable. Tony's son for example. Towards the end I didn't care about him. At times even Tony himself got on my nerves. Still, it has to be 1st or 2nd on just about anybody's list of best tv series.
I would love to see a special movie of either series soon before the characters get too old. A move of a kind of 'where are they now'. A prequel for The Sopranos when Tony was on the rise would be interesting. I'd love to see a prequel of Avon Barksdale and Stringer Bell as well. Any prequel would have to include Omar.
The one character I hated but found mesmerizing was Marlo Stansfield. One can only imagine what his early life was like. |

| Maybe its known to most of you but I didn't see it mentioned was that The Wire was based on a true story. 'Little' Melvin Williams who has a recurring role as the Deacon was the king of heroin in Baltimore in the '70s and part of the '80s. He served a long jail term. The creators of the show, one a cop who investigated Williams and the other a newspaper journalist who wrote about Williams created the show based on him. Stansfield character was based on a young drug king in Baltimore by the same name. |

I'd like to see a spin-off where Omar and Marlo join up in business and move their outfit to New Jersey to try and run distribution there and get involved in a gang war with Tony Soprano's crew.
Dat's how we do. |

I really enjoyed the way The Wire looked at problems in the city from a variety of angles each season.
Season 1: street level drug sales and violence
Season 2: how the drugs get into the country in the first place (shipyards)
Season 3: politics and ethics in the upper eschelon of local government
Season 4: how kids get lost in the system (Michael's story arc is awesome)
Season 5: how media plays a part in the whole shebang
Each season the characters move in and out of each theme, always connected, whether concious of it or not. Absolutely brilliant.
I just watched the entire first season of Treme, which was created by the same team and features some familiar faces. Fans of The Wire should definitely check it out. It's all about New Orleans in the months after Hurricane Katrina.
Big thumbs up on Breaking Bad...my favorite show running right now. Walt's character development from a timid, mousy pushover to a reluctant cutthroat is wonderful. |

A lot of events in the Wire happened in real life. One small example: the "lie detector" in the first episode of the last season.
One bigger example: the school district's big budget surprise and Carcetti (sp?) saying no to the Republican governor for the bailout really happened between Martin O'Malley (the mayor of B-more at the time) and former MD governor Erlich. And just like Carcetti, O'Malley ended up running for governor and beat Erlich. The two of them are running against each other this year again and it is neck-and-neck. |
