Yeah, I wonder why. Hmmm...actually, I think 34% is pretty low considering all the thieving owners/directors, screwing people on pension, taxes, failing to get the employee insurance(despite the fact that it is mandatory), lack of respect by their fellow "teachers", being branded as drug addicted, pederasts right when they step off the plane. Gee, I wonder why people take off and leave...a true mystery there.

Don't care why, just wish more would.

LOL. I'm with youTJ.

I have difficulty believing that 1/3 quit within 6 months.

1/3 seems a lot, but I wouldn't have a hard time believing it if I saw some data to back it up.

It seems like a lot because mostly we meet people who have stayed. When someone comes over, they don't necessarily make many foreign friends in the first month or so. Even then, they aren't going to have many foreign friends for a while (takes time to meet people). I would guess that a lot of the people who leave in the first few months do so because they are lonely or stressed out. This may be because they don't know anyone locally (foreign or Korean). So these are also people that we aren't likely to have met. There will also people people who come over and very quickly realize what their boss (e.g. hogwon owner) is dishonest or egocentric with a temper. I would guess that a lot of them will just pack up and leave. There are also some who get fired for whatever reason (whether their own fault or not).

34% does seem like a lot, but I can picture it. I'm sure that it must be at least 10%. I would guess that the majority of those who choose to leave early do so within the first 2 or 3 months.

That's because the other 66% don't have the cash to fly away.

Quite so, Teej. A lot of the foreigners here seem to be complete weeners.

Rolling Eyes
Thats because Koreans only hire young, inexperienced americans every time. Teachers with certificates get weeded out in the application process.

Sorry but Korea has gotten way too ridiculous to even consider anymore. It used to be tolerable, but the saturated market has allowed their illogical stupidity to reach full bloom.

That's classic.

Yup, newbies, why come? With the exchange rate it isn't worth it.

...not to mention the completely moldy one-room bunker (termed "apartment" in the contract) causing lung infection after lung infection...along with a corrupt public school district supervisor who refused to find other housing...

Okay, they know the numbers. What are they going to do about it? My guess. Nothing. Especially with regards to hogwons.

I'm ending my 4th year in EPIK (and Korea) next month. I've seen lots of people come and go, many within the first 6 months. I teach at two rural schools and one school was so bad, I was the first teacher in 3 years to last more than one semester. I'm rather large and use kettlebells. After butting heads with some of the bad boy ringleaders, they may have not have liked me, but they definately did what I told them.

One incident, a kid was actually using a baseball bat and smashed 2 windows in the teacher's office. He was threatening the Korean teachers with it. I kind of blind sided him and took the bat away. He attacked me and got a gut punch for his trouble. He went down having trouble breathing. I had no trouble with any students after that--except for the usual smart ass attitudes and no interest in studying English. I never liked being a hard ass, but the situation called for it. Things definately improved the next year when that class left.

From what I've seen, probably about 50% of teachers where I am have lasted a year or less. I couldn't put exact numbers to it. I know I am extremely burnt out on EPIK and Korea in general and can't wait to get the F out of here!

^^^ Yikes! Kids with baseball bats? Pretty tame where I am...I haven't known a soul who hasn't completed his or her contract. In fact, almost all have extended or stayed a couple of years.
