@jurassic5

So out of the 24 randomly chosen players, 16 were foreign players? That doesn't seem random to me. So, they basically tested both the foreign players and one Korean player on each team. Interesting.

I have never had problems buying tickets from scalpers either but they are increasing their prices. They are almost double the actual ticket price now for the cheap seats at Jamsil.

Baseball is definitely back to being one of the "cool" sports in Korea. Many of my students have switched their soccer/footballs out with baseball equipment. Still plenty playing football though. I have seen a huge change in the turnouts at Jamsil over the years. Good times indeed as I like the Korean/Asian atmosphere at baseball games. Love the cheering, etc and it only gets better the louder they get. I am also glad they haven't raised the beer/food prices much, if at all. $15 for a beer back home is ridiculous.

That's not what happened. It was 24 random players PLUS the 16 foreign players. The foreign players are automatically tested. The Korean players are tested randomly, 3 per team. That english article seems like a bad translation. It's pretty clear in the Korean article I posted.

Ahh, my Korean skills have not advanced enough to be able to read the news yet.

The set-up seems fair then. Now I just wonder how many times they test during the season.

Thank you Nick for your help.

Only a few more hours before today's games start!

You mean that the team that finishes in 1st place is automatically in the championship game and they wait while the other teams fight it out? If so, that is the dumbest playoff system on the planet.

Yes basically it works this way...

The 3rd place team plays the 4th place team in a 5-game series. The winner plays the 2nd place team in a 7-game series. The winner of that plays the 1st place team in a 7-game series for the championship.

It's certainly strange. But maybe the best they could do in an 8-team league. If they put the top 4 teams into a traditional 4 team playoff it takes a lot away from the regular season. All you would have to do is finish in the top half of the league to make the playoffs and it would make the battle for 1st, and 2nd place more or less meaningless. They could just have the top 2 teams play eachother for the championship, but that would make the playoffs a lot shorter. The playoff series draw a lot of attention and money, so that's probably not something they would like to do.

If they are successful with their plans to expand the league to 12 teams I'm sure they'll make some changes to how the playoffs work.

For the number of teams they have they seem to have way too many games. Well over a hundred (is it 120 or 130? I can't remember) but with less than 10 teams compared to the MLB with about 30 and over 160 games.

I've adopted Hanwa Eagles as my baseball team. What they should do is have a co league with Japan and then the island champs play each other. Have inter league play like in the MLB. Easy enough to travel between islands and you'd get bigger attendances.

Testing 5 players per team, automatically including the foriegn players does not seem fair. Do you get tested at your hagwon? Does everyone?

Test everyone or test no one. That is the only fair way.

Anyways I will go on record with my prediction of this season.

1. SK
2. Doosan
3. KIA
4. LG
5. Samsung
6. Lotte
7. Nexxen
8. Hanwha

LG is impressing me, but I don't think they can continue. KIA will certainly pick it up mid-season. Lotte seem to be floundering. I predict a tight competitive race for 4th place with LG edging out Samsung.

Champions: SK

doubleheader (kinda) in Daegu today.

Finising up the game from last night and starting 2nd game at 5pm (maybe should have started earlier in case that game goes extra?)

Gotta love the power outage in Daegu...

The plan is to expand to ten teams, not 12.

It was announced at the 30th anniversary event the week before the season started. They want to expand to 12 teams by the year 2020. I guess we'll have to wait and see if they can make it happen.

I think 12 is viable.

Changwon, Jeonju, Gangneung, and Ulsan could be the next 4 hosts. Or scratch Ulsan and add Bucheon, Seongnam (Bundang), Suwon, or Jeju.

Good game tonight between LG and SK.

I remember going to a game live last year between LG and SK. I looked at LG's lineup and almost croaked. They had their star pitcher Bong Jung Geun and a very strong lineup. SK absolutely skunked them and wore down Bong until he got kicked off the mound in the 5th, Song Eun Bom struck out about 50% of all hitters.

This year suddenly their impressive line-up is coming through for them. Whatever fire got lit under their ars is working.

Koreans talk of grand plans all the time but considering that a sponsor for the proposed tenth team has yet to appear, I say we won't see a 12th team by 2020. Many in the league had problems with NC Soft as a team owner given that it wasn't a conglomerate but it went through.

Japan has a population of 130 million and fields just 12 pro teams, so I'm thinking Korea with a population of 48 million might struggle to get 12.

SK is still the red-headed stepchild. They get the worst coverage of all the teams. Today on TV I got Doosan vs Lotte on 2 different channels, KIA vs Nexxen on another, and Samsung vs LG on the other. Where was the SK game?

Where's the K-League coverage? Stupid baseball games on all channels and not a football game in site...

People are too busy watching a real sport and not a bunch of people pretending to be hurt.

You mean the sport where they are on the injured list with a sprained pinky??? Rolling Eyes real sport = hockey, American hockey and rugby...end of story.
