You can easily tell when Koreans wear whitening cream. They usually don't put it on their necks, so you can see the contrast between the yellow skin on their necks, and the suddenly white skin on their faces.

It's not about Korea but somewhat related.

Sure it was/is "an American thing" as long as we include Central and South America too (and the Caribbean). I can't really speak about Canada beyond anecdotal stuff.

Out of curiosity, what are you basing this on?

I don't think you are black, but my family from the Caribbean, and their extended friends do not hold such an idiotic idea.

I am West Indian(ethnicity) and lived there until I was twelve. I can tell you without a doubt that this phenomenon (commonly know as shadism) exists in many forms in the Caribbean.

I can't speak for Africa or Africans but maybe you should ask your West Indian family more about it. There is even a brief write up on it in Wikipedia here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadism. There have been a fair bit of academic discourse coming out of the West Indies over the years regarding it.

Is this part of the reason for face masks and those hats with brims? I work on an island, so bad air can't be the only reason for people going about their business every day with a face mask on.

As an aside, I prefer light skinned Asian women.

Yeah, the face masks, hats with brims, and whitening cream are so that the people here can have whiter skin.

Places like Guyana and Trinidad, there have been race riots between "african" and 'indian' peoples. I wouldn't doubt skin shade/race is a problem there.

So sad. In Nigeria? Sad my friend. When I go down in a few months, I'll get to the bottom of that, you wait.

When I returned to the Caribbean at 9, I was shades lighter than most people and was called 'red' by the older ones. I was cute... but not dark enough Very Happy
