Congrats man. How often do you need to renew your F5?

Never. F5 is permanent residence.

Wow, so it's better than my F4 which I have to extend every 2 years. I'm married to a native Korean but my visa is an F4.

Which is not always true. The renewal time is at the discretion of the immigration officer on duty that day. My first F2 renewal was for 1 year. I have kids and a steady non-teaching job and am married to a Korean. According to the "rule of thumb" I should be sitting on a 3 year renewal...Right?

You could always have your wife sponsor your F2, then switch to F5 in a couple of years.

Am aware that is at the discretion of the Immigration Officer. A friend of mine just got married to a Korean and they gave him a 2 year F2.

Why switch? Someone holding an F4 Visa can now apply for permanent residency, F5 after holding an F4 for 2 years.

Very funny. Born and raised in the UK. A far cry from China.

Thanks for the congrats

Yeah, that's a good point. China is a lot more enjoyable of a country. Don't put the two together!

As far as I know there is no way to switch from F4 to F5. That's why he should switch if he wants the F5.
