You post here more than most. What does that say about you? |

It's just a question and an observation that expats in KR seem less social than expats in other places (HK, Shanghai, Singapore).
You don't have to be so angry about everything, it's Friday dude. |

He didn't seem that angry to me. He just asked a pretty valid question, which you haven't answered yet. If you're calling other people withdrawn and isolated you should be prepared to explain why you aren't. As for your observations about expats living in several different countries/cities I think most people would agree that you'd need to live in each city for a considerable length of time, maybe in more than one location, to be able to produce a valid comparison. Also if you were specifically talking about fromtheuk, I think you'll find he lives in Saudi Arabia these days |

Yes, I live in Saudi Arabia.
Mind you, in Korea I was withdrawn and isolated by choice. I did have one friend I'd see regularly in Itaewon though. |

Hello. I post on days when I am in the office, like now.
Yes Edward, I generally only talk/post about things I know about. |

"Q: why are the expats in Korea so withdrawn and isolated?"
If I may I will take a stab at answering;
a) you don't know where other expats hang out
b) you're dismissive of anybody who is different to you because you have such a low opinion of yourself
c) you're just plain angry at everyone because you hate your life
d) everybody you know always says they're not going out but it's just they're not going out with you.
Now if you'd care to expand on your initial, loaded question minus the inherent flaws in the premise behind it... |

Or maybe because e) they are so busy being angry and arguing on the internet. |

My writing ability has suffered after a few years teaching ESL. I spell words wrong all the time. Sometimes I even catch myself asking a question in Konglish. This started to scare me so I decided this would be a good place to come discuss the whole ESL thing in Korea and keep my writing at a decent level.
I'm not too sure about the guys that don't teach ESL but come here to bash ESL teachers though. I worry about you fellows sometimes. With that amazing job there must be something better you have to do out there.... |

Why is asking a natural question assumed "bashing"? |

I suggest reading as much as you can if you have few native English speakers to talk to on a regular basis. Do you keep a journal? Download any TV or movies? Lots of ways nowadays to beat the 'lost language' - we all went through it. Believe me, it was a LOT harder to deal with pre-internet days |

Um, I said bashing, not asking a natural question. I didn't provide any specific examples so you are jumping to conclusions here about what I meant. |

I started doing all those things a while back so I'm starting to get it back. I was confused about it for a while until I talked to some people people that have been here for over 2 years. Apparently it's pretty common. |

For one thing, it's interesting to see what people new to the country are up to. So many things have changed here over the years, but so many things have stayed the same.
For the most part, though, I post when others have questions about getting a Ph.D., particularly in fields not related to teaching or teaching English, and about tenure track university positions. With 20 years of experience over here, I can sometimes lend insight on other topics, too. |
