Congrats!
are you still answering questions? If so, here goes...
Did you become a smoker while in the military? Were you pressured to smoke? Given free cigarettes?
What is the general relationship with smoking amongst conscripts?
Thanks.
...curious as it seemed most teens didn't smoke when I was there, but ajosshis for the most part did. |

Nope. People told me that I'll end up smoking by the time I'm done but I was never tempted to. Probably because I hate smoking. I wasn't really pressured but some guys told me try it out. New guys who are smokers are welcomed because senior conscripts and officers who are smokers need smoking buddies. A lot of guys do become smokers because of the stress but nowadays guys can also turn to eating junk food (many a conscript have gained weight during their service) or working out to release stress. Smokers were the majority when I first entered the Army but they are now slowly dimming in numbers. |

Was told by a fellow teacher who did his service in the mid-90's that smokers got more breaks. So that is why he took up smoking. Supposedly if they were on work details they would take frequent breaks, and if you smoked you got to take a smoke break at every break opportunity. Otherwise you're breaks would be less frequent. |

This is true. Asking for a break to make a call home, or just to rest for a while is unthinkable. But asking for a smoke break is completely normal. Its weird but I didn't want to mess up my lung just for that. |
