I love how the OP threw in the getting ready, commuting, and lunch hours under the facade of "work-related hours". And the "tens of thousands of dollars of debt"? Puhhh-leaze... that's nothing. (probably $20,000 max) Don't make it out to seem like it's $50,000+...
Oh, what a tough life! Oh, what a tough society (based on this loose example)!

She has about 30k in debt I think.
How is tens of thousands of dollars in debt for not learning French "nothing"? Do you have no sense of value?
Tell me how much you would pay to NOT learn French:
$0
$10,000
$20,000
$30,000 (my gf)
$50,000+
Which do you think is the best price to not learn French? Especially considering that anyone can learn French free from the library, internet, Skype, and couchsurfing or meetups.
And how many years of your life is it appropriate to spend on not learning French, from professors at a top 10 Korean university who are afraid to speak French out loud (but have PhD's in French)?
1 year
2 years
3 years
4 years
More?
It seems to me like most Korean lives are full of appearances. Spend years in "education" doing nothing, studying all night not learning anything and having no real social life or experiences, and then work a job until late at night for the rest of your life not really being productive, just pushing around paper and wearing a suit, because you're doing work if you dress the part and are there for long hours. And as long as you have a PhD you're smart, even if you forgot all of your French 2 decades ago. Don't forget to do everything considered "prestigious" and forget about your own original goals, motivations, and values. |

Well, you're posting on a Web site specifically for English teachers, pulling this fact out now just makes you look pompous to others. Everyone assumes you're of a certain ilk based on the fact that you're posting here, and thus gear their responses accordingly.
Not that I'm trying to jump on the dogpile. Your situation is a bit different from what the average Joe dating a local lady deals with.
I've worked with people here who made under a million won a month for full-time hours, so I think the thing is that you want an ambitious girlfriend. If she actually is ambitious and passes up networking opportunities like the one you mentioned, she's doing it wrong. |

If your girlfriend is earning over 2 million won a month and living at home she is earning about double most korean teachers earn, who have degrees and 10 years experience, with no expenses.
It seems the only problem is that her career path doesnt leave any time for a boyfriend. |

You're way off there. A Korean teacher in a public school starts off in the 2 million range. However if they are a hagwon teacher, that may be more realistic making maybe 1.5 million to start with. |

| I dont know about public school teachers, but from the koreans I've spoke to after deductions it's much closer to 1 million than 2, and there's very little room for promotion in hagwans, especially for females and yearly increases arent in the 100-200k range like it us for us. |

No, it is is more around the 1.6-7-1.7 range for starting Korean teachers in a public school. I temporarily dated a couple and am friends with a few more. One had three years experience and was only making 1.9. If you are factoring in bonuses (Chu-sok and the New Year's for example) then that's closer to the mark.
And hakwon teachers...1.5 is a good salary. I've worked in a few and I only know one teacher who was making more. But not only was she the head teacher she was also the recruiter and in charge of taking care of new foreign teachers. So she often worked six and sometimes even seven days. |

| Back to KT salaries. It depends on whether they are tenure teachers or just contract teachers. If they are contract teachers they are most likely starting at 2 + with bonuses and incentives. If they are just one year contract teachers then maybe they are earning less. |

Minimum wage is just over 4.000 won.
So that is not too bad. And here teachers earn a minimum of 20k an hour an complain about it. sjees. |

This is a very good point. Tenured teachers (who have a few years experience) would be making around the 2 million won/month mark. And by the time they retire they can be making nearly three times that (including bonuses and incentives).
Contract teachers earn less (I've heard between 1.5-2 million) and may start at the bottom again if they start at a new school. Although if they stay longer than 3 years ( I think it is) they must be hired as full-time? |

She always said she wanted to do interesting stuff. That's why I got into a relationship with her, she presented herself as way different than most Korean girls. She had been and lived all over Europe, was in the music producing club, said she wanted to be a "nomad" and not get a terrible job. When she got this job I was a bit disappointed. I had come to Korea and was working only 3-4 days per week so I could see her and hang out with her, yet we couldn't do anything together. |
Just consider yourself lucky that you found out what she is really like before you married her. Lots of guys aren't so fortunate. |

| Foreign (China, Mongolia, etc) girls have it worse here IMO. Endless days, take about 50k for one day, get terrible racist treatment, often don't get paid properly and every other job offer on the Internet is to do with the 'girl service' culture that is so rampant in Korea. |

Anyone else in this situation? I understand there are a lot of guys who date Korean women here. |
Let this be a lesson, treat such things as a "holiday romance" type senario, don't take overseas relationships seriously. Dump her and move on. |
Get her pregnant and use the maternity leave for a holiday together - extended honeymoon! |

My experience here is irrelevent to the point, I've been in Korea for just shy of 9 months. Yes, I'm not a hardened veteran like you, but I fail to see why that matters. My lack of time in the country doesnt effect the knowledge I've gained from people here with more experience.
In the previous post you pretty much just agreed with me so it just sounds like you're newbie bashing for the sake of it.
'1.5 million is a good salary for a hagwon teacher' So good is better than average right? So what is average? 1.2 million? After deductions I come out with just over 2 million. My comment about them being paid about 1 million doesnt seem so outrageous anymore. |
