| Influence man, INFLUENCE! HK is influenced by British settlement so they drive on the left side of the road. SK is influenced by the USA so they drive on the right side of the road. Yes, it makes sense. |

And those of us who work in a PS here no this is silly. Standardized tests are the downfall of education in America. Koreans do those well. Obama talks alot, just like any other poitician, and it's mostly from his behind. |

I flat out disagree about standardized tests. Standardized tests remain the best way to objectively determine if a student understands the material, or at least can recall it and define what it is.
Subjective grading has become the downfall of American education as students who did not learn the material are nonetheless given a decent grade for trying or "showing interest". |

Standarized tests show you have learned what is on a test. Not that you can use what you've learned in a real situation. I knew pleanty of people in school that could test well but never use what they learned outside of the classroom.
Subjective grading falls under PC bullcrap in my mind which is becoming the downfall of society in America.
Thanks to the poster above that pointed out my mistake with no and know. We all have brain farts. But maybe not you? |

Standardized tests may be bad, but they're the best we have to assess large numbers of students in a practicable manner.
I'd say that a good standardized test score more strongly correlates to having learned the material than not.
And while testing well may not indicate everything, testing poorly certainly would. If you can't even figure it out on a multiple choice exam, well, you're kind of a lost cause. |

It is the best to test in large numbers. That's why we do it. But treating students like cattle is never a good idea.
Some of the smartest students test poorly. I was a SPED teacher in the US and some kids that people thought were borderline SPED, becasue of test scores, were very inteligent kids. Practical application of knowledge is the best indicator of what has been learned and not learned. But yes it is almost impossible to do in a large school. |
