| I've had this happen to me only once, and it was back in the US. Just out of the shower and I heard the lock start to move, so with only the towel wrapped around me, I grabbed my .357 and got to the door just in time to block it with my foot and point the gun at the guys head through the door. Turned out it was the idiotic maintenance guy. I told him it would be better if he knocked in the future, him having no idea how close he was to death... |
I hope this was made up. Did anyone else look at this and think that this is a completely retarded reaction? No wonder you people have the highest rate of gun deaths in the industrialised world. Your first reaction is to point a gun. Not stop the door, yell, get angry, etc, but nope, grab the 357 and point. Ridiculous.[/list] |

I'm not a gun owner, but I can understand the thought process - any intruder is a potential threat, and a gun helps/may help to modify that threat.
And that's coming from a Canadian. |

Obviously some gyopos in here defending Korean behaviour
If the school is giving workmen a key to get into the place you live they should inform you, and the guy with the key should knock anyway. Very rude behaviour. I'd have a go at someone if they walked into my flat unannounced

Hey, some of the gun forums I know of are populated by more than a few proud Canucks. |

I'm Canadian as well, and I still think it's ridiculous. And here is something else to ponder. He hears someone at his door, and happens to have a 357 magnum, not locked up or anything, but close enough at hand, to grab it, and make it to the door before it opens? It's just laying on your bathroom counter just in case? |

Captain Corea is not a Canadian, he's an Albertan. |

I was under the impression that the person already had prior knowledge of maintenance people coming over. If he didn't, that changes everything.
Still, change the locks.
And sorry, but there are plenty of people the world over who would question the "drunk guy mistakenly barged into my apartment because I was foreign, NOT because he was drunk" and "maintenance people opened the door to my apartment without knocking because I was foreign" version of events. |

They say that gun owners are much, much, much more likely to shoot a friend or family member than an intruder. |

Going out on a limb here, but I'm thinking he barged in because he was drunk and went to the wrong apartment, not because you were foreign.

I was guilty of that one time, myself. I wasn't drunk. The elevator was taking forever, and my apartment was way up there. I thought I reached my floor, and I all of a sudden just opened the door not thinking it would open, and I saw two half-naked people, and I rain the be Jesus out of there. I was like Crikey! Oops! I didn't mean any harm, and the drunk didn't, either, I am sure. The OP's door should have been locked in that case. |

It has happened to me on at least 3 occasions......and all 3 times it was the estate agent showing people my apt.
They would always just start turning the handle of the door without even knocking. Then, if my door was unlocked they would come right in. If the door was locked I would hear a key going in then they would come right in.......once very embarrassingly for myself and my lady friend!!
I complained to my respective bosses at the time and asked is it normal for people in Korea to go right into someones house without permission or even knocking. I was told no.
A Korean friend said it was probably because they knew a foreigner was living there, couldn't speak English, so guessed it would be no use trying to communicate with the tenant. |
Mate you were lucky it was the estate agents and not your missus. |

Who's to say it wasn't locked up? It may had been locked up in a convenient place. /shrug It wasn't my story.
And my memory might be foggy, but it wasn't "someone at his door", it was "someone trying to break in", no? |

Sometimes we have to thin the herd and the dumb ones are first to go. The point is, the gun owner is still alive.
Having weapons available at all times is part of human culture. It's a recent historical change that people rely on others, like the slow-moving police, to do the protecting for them. |

| I keep a rattan Kali stick close at hand in the entryway of my apartment. That shiz hurts more than metal, and doesn't break as easily. |

The way evolution works, killing your offspring is about as dumb as killing yourself. |

Wouldn't keeping the magnum locked up in an inconvenient place defeat the purpose of having one in the first place? If you're taking a shower in the bathroom, the most logical place to keep your weapon in case of a break-in is in the bathroom. I can concur with that because I've had the vast majority of walk-ins to my apartment happen while I was in the shower. |
