Well yeah, Korean mainstream culture has kind of gone meh.

I see a bit of a difference in TV culture between Korea and the west...in the west there is a much more fractured audience. Some socio-economic groups will watch certain styles of TV show, while others wouldn't dream of watching those shows. For example, the western working classes seem to not be able to get enough of talent shows, whereas the western middle class tend to think themselves above that kind of entertainment.
In Korean I don't think that divide is there. Everyone seems to enjoy the primetime TV shows here. Regardless of income or social status.
It means the Korean TV producers feel they can keep on churning out a couple of successful show formats year after year. There's no demand for anything different to accommodate different tastes. The overwhelming majority all seem to like the same few formats.
1. Celebrities on missions.
2. Talent audition shows.
3. Celebrities chatting.
Not forgetting the drama's of course.
Also I was told that there is an unbelievably low amount of money available to Korean TV producers. Not enough to take chances on any new ideas. |

Nice post. Good insight. I guess this gets back to the tired old Noobservations regarding Korea's uniformity/conformity.

| What's that really popular one they have on when they get a bunch of celebrities to take part in a singing contest? They show it on public holidays and it seems to go on for ever. The whole of my wife's family was glued to the set when that was last on. I really can't understand how they can get so much mileage from a few B listers singing off key occasionally. Is that really all there is to it? It makes those UK programmes when they get z listers to eat cockroaches seem like ground-breaking drama. |

I may be mistaken, and I'm not speaking for carbon...
sounds like 'everything and everyone in Korean is the same'.
It's very hard to dispute, and although I am saying this tongue
in cheek, I don't know an easier way to describe it.
Is there a more obvious nationality to paint in this manner?
I don't know it.
Not sure if all Ktv is the same. I don't watch tv.
