Thankfully, I have a pretty good burrito place right around the corner from work, and a Mexican place that serves Tex-Mex style (with cooks from border towns in Texas/Mexico and Arizona/Mexico) right around the corner from that.
I'm spoiled in that sense. |

There are a couple of decent tex-mex places, but if you want real Mexican food the only place I know of is Don Charly's in Kyungridan. There are only tacos and tortas right now, but in the winter he also does an amazing sopa azteca and he often has random specials when he can get the ingredients. |

Where did you find good Mexican in Korea? Tell me as I'd like to know since I've never had good Mexican here. |
Well, even back when I was living there (until 2005), a great place called "La Salsa Loca" in Yeouido. I think that's gone now, but on my most recent trip I went to the IFC Mall there and although people like to knock chains, "On the Border" was just fine. It was about on par with restaurants like "El Cholo" and "El Coyote" in Los Angeles (which is where I'm from).
Although in L.A., when we say Mexican, we're usually referring to taco trucks or more basic restaurants (like King Taco, El Taurino). Not sure where you can find this type of Mexican in Korea, but my fellow L.A. friend said "Dos Tacos" was similar to the street tacos in L.A. --- and of course, now in L.A., tacos also mean fusion tacos because of the Kogi trucks... and if that's what you're looking for, Vatos Tacos in Itaewon was decent. |

Unless I'm remembering incorrectly, the Don Charly's guy told me that he was a chef at Spain Club (not the Itaewon location) before opening his spot. I could be wrong, that was nearly a year ago, the conversation was mostly in Spanish and I was then just realizing how much Spanish I'd forgotten. Might be the same guy, he is from Mexico City. |

I Couldnt disagree with this post more. Ive been to OTB several times and to say its on par with LA is an insult to LA. Thats like saying Kraze Burger was on par with In and Out. OTB while not bad is way overpriced. The only thing at the place that comes close to the real thing is the alcohol. |

Your Spanish might not be so bad. He was the chef at Spain Club before he opened Don Charly's. |

| I decided to make a big batch of burritos, because the Gringos guys are taking a break until after Chuseok and I need my daily fix. I was able to customize them, using brown rice and whole-wheat tortillas. I made braised chicken breasts using a mixture of diced tomatoes in their own juice, water, and Mexican spices, then shredded it after it cooled a bit. A bit of shredded cheese, salsa, and done. 20 burritos ended up costing about 40k, which is pretty cheap, so I think I'll be doing this again. I wrapped them in "paper cooking foil" and zipper bags, and they're now in the freezer. |

I think freezing stuff is somewhat overrated. I just make a batch of filling and use it to make burritos throughout the week. In the end, it is much cheaper and better than getting burritos elsewhere (cost/size/quality-wise). |

| I wouldn't want to eat chicken after 3 days in the fridge, though, so freezing is a better option for me. I agree that making it at home is better, costwise. |

Did order from them a few times. Was not really happy with the burritos, can make better stuff at home easily, but they were convenient. |

I Couldnt disagree with this post more. Ive been to OTB several times and to say its on par with LA is an insult to LA. Thats like saying Kraze Burger was on par with In and Out. OTB while not bad is way overpriced. The only thing at the place that comes close to the real thing is the alcohol. |
I said it was on par with restaurants like El Cholo and El Coyote in L.A., not with Mexican restaurants in L.A. in general. Nowhere did I say it was on par with restaurants like Guelaguetza, El Parian, or Tortas Ahogadas Guadalajara.
Since you're knowledgeable, why don't you tell me some of your favorite L.A. Mexican restaurants so I can check them out? I'm always looking for new good spots that I haven't been to before. |

I got my Gringo's burritos, and they're pretty good.
I guess for the price, (about 6,200 won each after delivery) they're not that much cheaper than the Dos Tacos burrito at 7,000 won. But it is nice to eat at home, and have some burrito variety in life.
Now I have 5 of those reusable ice packs left from the gringos delivery. Hate to through them away, but really no use for them either.
I don't want to end up with a freezer full of reusable ice packs after a few gringo's deliveries.
Anyone have a good use for them? Koreans are picnic specialists, I guess if I just lay them by the recycle garbage, they'll be picked up... |
