Interesting. I can see older Koreans having some negative views of Jews, Blacks, etc. but not the young generation.

Einstein is known and revered and they know he's jewish. The younger generation loves hip hop and have an admiration for Oprah Winfrey, Obama, Will Smith and Michael Jackson. I've had students choose what turned out to be black soccer players names as their english name (Ben [Benzema], Theirry [Henry] and have had one Usher and Chris Brown. One girl named herself Beyonce.

When ever I've done english camps with black teachers, the students clamor to be in his class. The few black teachers I know are very popular at their schools so I would disagree on young Koreans not liking Blacks or Jews. Older ones yes, but I've not seen any evidence of it in young students. Its the ajumas/mothers that have a problem wtih hiring a black teacher not the students from my limited experience.

I'm sure there are some students who have an issue but I would think they're the exception rather than the rule.

Regarding Korean students enthusiastic about black teachers and calling themselves by the names of black performers, I had a Korean college student who had studied break dancing in NY apparently. He told me his hobby was "black people."

His excitement about blacks started out refreshing but grew more and more offensive each class. He was highly invested in blacks being 'gangsta' and had acquired a "black" English accent that was pretty damned weird sounding.

when I asked him if he was aware that blacks in the US were also police officers, teachers, attorneys and some didn't like hip hop, he grew more and more confrontational.

Ultimately, he had the same stereotypes about blacks that my racist students do...sigh...

How fitting that the creator of such terrible music is a racist [Mod Edit].

On an unrelated note I love the Westerners who come over here thinking there open minded and cultured for listening to K-Pop and going to karaoke. Embarassed

Clearly a disturbed girl. But I note with some amusement her insistance that the world would see "better efficiency and better quality work" if all the blacks were gone... what a uniquely Korean tinge her racism takes! Lawl.

Yes, because I've never seen white folks say that stuff on Stormfront.

Look, she's a racist loon and deserves to be pilloried. But to say that her view is unique to Korea is ridiculous.

Settle down, I was just teasing the east-Asian/pseudo-Confucian obsession with work and efficiency, and finding it a little funny to see it surface in a less usual context (a Kpop-industry person spewing anti-black stereotypes). Was not meant to be taken seriously.

Seeing how much K-pop takes/copies from African American pop culture, you can understand the fascination. Although i guess many Koreans don't realized how much is "borrowed".

Your story reminds me of a time we were playing some basketball here and there was one black guy with us. This Korean guy all decked out in his oversized jersey, gold necklace, and sideways hat, runs right up to the guy and throws a sign and says "Yo! I'm out!" and ignores everyone else and walks away. Our friend didn't even know the guy and was totally puzzled at first and then yelled "We don't all talk like that, you know?"

Racism does not survive personal contact.

If some Koreans have viewed blacks with disdain it is probably due to that lack of any personal experience.

... or the LA riots.

It would be nice if that were true.
Unfortunately, personal contact is often a catalyst for racism.

Yeah, that was not one of Julius' better submissions.
