Yonsei University and its various aligned hospitals are stand-alone entities, which is why guaranteed discounted treatment at Wonju Christian Hospital or at Yonsei Severence was removed from the contract. It is a 3rd party entity that cannot be compelled to offer the 50% discount on treatment that was removed from the contract, but to my knowledge honoured without guarantee.
"hogwonguy1979", at no point has it been suggested or intimated that Yonsei University staff are not enrolled in the NHIC! ALL Yonsei staff are enrolled in the NHIC on commencement of their employment. "hogwonguy1979" and for that matter "World Traveler", I am not sure what you have to gain by spreading misinformation as if you know what the situation at Yonsei University Wonju actually is. |
starting to sound a bit like an apologist daryl. yonsei's wonju campus has had a bad reputation since at least 2002. If you can find an archived version of this board from then you will find stories about a waygook director named Linda Tissue (not sure of the first name but the last I'm sure of) and some of her antics. I can attest to her misleading me and my wife back then we were lucky not to take a job then with yonsei. Also have friends who worked there recently who can also attest to the shady contracts of recent times.
anybody want to bet this guy daryl complains to a mod and tries to get this thread pulled? |

Thank you for proving my point "hogwonguy1979".
So to summarize, you have never worked there, and you have hearsay from unnamed people "who worked there recently who can also attest to the shady contracts of recent times." I don't need to complain to a mod (Who would presumably only pull a thread if it was wrong/abusive etc.), I just need to respond with fact and my 6 years at Yonsei.
You can brand me an apologist if you like, but I am only addressing misinformation. People reading this will make up their own minds and accept what a current employee of 6 years who knows what they are talking about who has detailed the facts; or you, a person acting on hearsay who has never worked at Yonsei University Wonju. I cannot attest for what happened in 2002, but I can attest to everything since 2009. |

On a positive note, the countryside on the way out to Wonju is really beautiful. It's a very pleasant trip. And three hours to Seoul ain't that bad. You can still be in the pub in Itaewon before 8pm on a Friday.
As a rule I only apply for jobs in the boonies. Pleasant countryside, less crowded, little pollution and quiet. |

frankly i find your posts a bit on the fishy side when you only post when somebody complains about the job or about life in wonju that makes me think you are nothing but a plant for school but what do I know, I was only there for 18 years teaching and had more connections all over the country than you could only dream of |

Whatever "hogwonguy1979", you can call me a "plant" all you like, however I can be simply found via a Google search. I have never said that Yonsei University Wonju campus is the greatest thing ever, but I HAVE addressed misinformation about the place. No place is perfect, and things change a lot over the years. But when I see misinformation spread it pisses me off.
I do have an issue that you are now not only making slurs about a place you have never worked at, but now because you don't like the facts I am stating you are now making false accusations about me to try to minimize that I am stating facts. Oh, just FYI I stepped down as a coordinator in February 2014, and next month I will be leaving Yonsei and Korea, so I don't actually have any vested interest or anything to gain by doing so, except for telling the truth.
I will note that you appear to have that ego issue that some foreign teachers in Korea get, Mr. "I was only there for 18 years teaching and had more connections all over the country than you could only dream of." Wow, so you have longevity and "connections", that must make you correct... |

Anyone work here currently or recently?
It seems that there is a lot of conflicting information as to what it's like... |

Yes, Wonju is definitely not Seoul or Busan, so is less popular among expats, especially those who don't know so much about Korea.
I have been to Wonju. It is in Gangwon-do, just over the border with Chungcheongbukdo. You will find supermarkets, cafes, gyms, cinemas, and so on, and there will be a foreigner community who will probably eat out or go drinking together.
Wonju is 2 hours by bus from Seoul, maybe slightly less. That is better than me-I live in a village and need 2 buses to reach Seoul, Gwangju or wherever.
I met some people who taught at a university-not Yonsei in another small city-and they said they lived on campus and it was a good ways out of the city centre. That may be true of Yonsei too, I don't know.
I cannot comment on the university contract. |

Thanks for the info. I've actually been to Wonju before. I used to live in nearby Yangpyeong, so Wonju seemed like a big city in comparison. I could definitely see myself content with living there. I was more questioning what it's like to work for Yonsei specifically. |
