Either way, I listened for just a few seconds to the video of her song that someone linked to earlier. Ironically, it was over-produced, which is a shame since she seems to have a nice voice.

I suppose I can see this from a few perspectives. I do get annoyed by the Korean habit to be hyper nationalistic and maintain their Korean identity while living abroad, often with a non Korean passport. I get a little more annoyed when Korean kids grow up elsewhere and seem to feel they are more Korean than the nations they actually come from.

But I kind of get it. I'm never going to 'be' Korean (even if Koreans were magically begging me to be) and I imagine my half Korean son would always have this feeling of being different here, that he wasn't really Korean and in the absence of his 'other' culture would probably at some point wish to find out if could be Canadian. My son will always face the pressures of others telling him is is either different or not really Korean. This girl likely had that a lot growing up and sees this as a chance to be 'normal' for once.

I am also part Danish, but because my grand father's family decided to adopt a western way of life and be entirely Canadian, my mother knows nothing of her homeland. I admire what my family did, but I do wish we could have held on to our Danish roots. Not out of a need to find a place where I fit in (cause being white and speaking without an accent pretty much assures that you will fit in just fine in Canada) but just because I find it interesting and I think I would be a better person for it.

Of course that being said. I never went there. I came here to a place where I wouldn't fit in and that would be just as intriguing (perhaps even more so). I don't think you really need to cling to your roots...or even discover them. The world is full of cool stuff to discover so people that feel they have to discover their roots seem rather pathetic and narrow minded to me. If they just want to out of curiosity...cool.

Who the hell knows what this girl actually thinks. You'd have to have a pretty heavy conversation with her to try and figure that one out, so why not just give her the benefit of the doubt and let her have her moment.

She's currently a contestant/participant on a major TV performance program that features some of the most popular (both new and very established) artists in Korean music. I'd say she made a smart choice.

it was either that or going nowhere in the American market. An idiot can make the same choice, I think.
