As far as the crazier threads, and threads in general, the ability to post photos can really liven a forum up.
Especially those animated GIFs. They quickly turn into local board memes.
I mentioned the SB Nation forums. Take a look at this one and observe how things "flow". Ignore what people are yacking about, just watch how conversations get structured and people interact.

I think this kind of format would encourage people, especially windbags like myself, to keep things briefer, while still allowing for expanded discussion.
It also allows a topic not to get dragged down. People can comment on other things while two people have their flame war.
Combine that with some a "Trending" and a "Latest" sidebar and you've got some things going. One notable problem is the lack of avatars.
Also, real information would be helpful. Not Seoul Eats Payola reviews of restaurants, real reviews with real info- What kind of beer do they serve, how much does it cost, what kind of sports are on the TV, and whats the best munchie they have. That and love motels to crash at- Which ones have roaches and which ones are borderline suites at cheap prices. Or public bathrooms that are clean. |

I think it's in everyone's best interest to keep it from going too far to the reddit left or too far to the 4chan right. I don't have a problem with image macros but real discussion and typed words are better.
Also, as far as job posting boards are concerned, I would personally man it and kill any jobs that don't fit a strict criteria.
Avatars are in but would be regulated to be a certain maximum size and centered as not to disrupt the flow of the forums.
I'm working on the coding for the php right now. Probably have it all working in a few days.
edit: If you want a religion threads, it can go in the off-topic forum. There can be one for thoughtful discussion of religion and one for all-out hating and mocking. Going into the thoughtful discussion thread and going insane will get you probation or deported to the crazy people forum for a few days. |
