I'm American, a bit on an Anglophile, never had problems with Brits (or anyone else, really) when it comes to their nationality.

Well, maybe Canadians...but I should confess if I am snarky about one country, and usually only in my cups, mind, it tends to be Canada. But I've gotten better about biting my tongue.

Arm wrestling?
Sounds like some of you Brits have met some right *beeps*.
An American mentioning the "evils" of the British Empire? I've never heard anyone harp on about it, but I guess anything's possible.

As for the chip on the shoulder, we often refer to them as Texans.

No Briton should feel ashamed of the British empire or take criticism from any other nationality.

Firstly, what country or people haven't at one time had their own empire?

Secondly, we had our fun in the sun then we went home. The Chinese, Russians, USA, Canadians, Australians etc are all sitting pretty continuing to get fat off the proceeds of imperialism.

I think Brits get singled out is that we act as sin eaters for the former colonies. Blame Brits for all the bad bits in history and claim all the good bits for yourself.

Or at least tried to. I think in a league table of countries that exploited other countries in their empire but didn't treat them too badly (apart from the odd massacre here or there) Britain would do fairly well. I still like the Eddie Izzard view point of it.

'We stole countries with the cunning use of flags. Just sail around the world and stick a flag in. "I claim India for Britain!" They're going "You can't claim us, we live here! Five hundred million of us!" "Do you have a flag …? "What? We don't need a flag, this is our home, you bastards" "No flag, No Country, You can't have one! Those are the rules... that I just made up!...'

British, American, European, Chinese, Korean, African. Everyone is living in Margaret Thatchers neo-liberal market economy now. We won, the commies lost. Western powers UNITE!

The Brits that come over and are treated nicely return the niceness with arrogance and rudeness. When I was at one of my favorite coffee shops back home in the USA, these two British ******** were talking about how dumb Americans were right in a shop with a lot of Americans obviously. I don't see too many British in the U.S., but when I do there is about an 80 percent chance they are nasty and rude. Brits just please stay in Britain unless of course your homeland isn't that great after all.

When I was teaching in Thailand you should have heard the bigoted comments some of the British teachers were making towards the Asian teachers that were teaching subject classes, also making rude arrogant comments in general.

The problem is why can't the British show the same respect that they demand from everybody else?

Stereotypically, Brits are pompous and arrogant and Americans are loud and obnoxious. But they are just stereotypes...

I have heard American tourists loudly voice their opinions on the shortcomings of the UK but so what? Is every American a pompous idiot who can't keep their opinions to themselves in somebody elses country? I don't think so. Rolling Eyes

One thing I have to say about the Brits...I'm sorry but ya'll have some of the worst slang ever.

Seriously? 'Footy'? "Anyone up for some footy?" conjures up images, none of them sporting or platonic. Calling a smoke a 'fag'? 'Fapping'?

Some work needs to be done there.
