^^ I live in Gimhae (pop. 500K) and 60 pyeong apartments don't exist. The most expensive apartments are 55 pyeong, and there aren't many that size.
My family doctor commutes from Haeundae where there are 70 pyeong apartments (and better schools in his opinion). He probably makes more than 10 Mil a month.
In the very high end areas (like Haeundae) you'll find large apartments. But they don't really exist in middle class areas.
I'd say 40+ pyeong is quite well off. A few school teachers I know in them, but most are in my size (34). Some are in 25-30 pyeong. And most of them are tenants or have large debts. [It's funny I'm wealthier than them, but they think I'm poor. Party because of my old car I guess. Often they think I live in a one room.]
And for some government benefits (was it Jeonse loan, can't remember), one of the criteria was the house must be smaller than 25 pyeong. |

| i live in ulsan, the richest city in korea, so there are many bigger apartments, but like others have suggested, their seems to be a movement away from bigger apartments (45+) to the now ideal size of 27-35 pyg., as they are cheaper to maintain (i.e., heating, cooling, and monthly fees). we are thinking of moving and I was approached by someone in the building to trade my 35 pyg apartment for his 45 pyg one almost straight up. |

| Most of my Canadians friends live in much nicer houses than 95% of Koreans do. Yeah to pay for that they have a large debt, but if they lived in a Korean size apartment they probably wouldn't. |
A lot of families live in apartments between 30-60 pyeong. That's roughly 1000-2000 sqf. I grew up in a house that was maybe 2400 sqf (including the basement). Granted, you don't get the lawn space though. But you can buy cheaper land that is maybe two hours out of Seoul (that covers most of teh country) for a decent price, and build whatever you want on it. |
I've been looking into buying land and I could buy a nice house in a good neighborhood on a similar or larger lot in the U.S. for what they're asking here. This is outside of Seoul.
What do you consider a decent price? |

Koreans are real gearheads. Anything worth doing seems to be worth spending tons of money on, even for those just beginning say golf or camping. |

It's all about the appearance in Korea. |

Yeah we noticed the huge camping fad last summer during our visit. We do not camp, prefering inns, mimbaks or smaller motels but those Korean families who did camp were loaded with top end gear.
That reminds me of the hiking fad, the bicycle fad and so on... |

Pretty much, but there's also a real belief that more expensive is always better. |

Those figures are surprising, especially seeing Jeonnam as #3, wealthier than Seoul! Perhaps PPP skews reality? |

Remember Seoul, being both the economic and cultural capital of Korea, attracts people from all over the country. Probably 70% of all South Korean have at least at one point in their lives lived in metro Seoul for at least 6 months. And 90% of S Koreans under the age of 25 want to try living in/near Seoul. Having the masses come into a city does skew the numbers lower. |
