Yeah, for some reason, when it comes to single malt, Korea seems to be Macallan or (bleh) Glenfiddich. Maybe 'morangie. I've only been able to find Laphroaig online for ridiculous prices. Aside from that I usually got it at the bar in the Park Hyatt. Fortunately on my last junket up to Seoul, I discoverd Bar Off. Nice place. Really good atmosphere.

I shouldn't poopoo Scotch's other than Laphroaig, but whenever I see it, I can drink that and only that. Kinda like if I'm going out to an Izakaya- Suntory and nothing else.

Why are so many people into Islay malts these days? I like the peaty malts as much as most but there are other great whiskies out there. Try a Old Pulteney or Highland Park for a less peaty single malt.

For all the money(you claim to be earning), you still think "Jonnie Walker" is good whisky? ha ha ha, cheap blended crap sold to idiots with no class or no appreciation, with fancy advertising. I wouldn't drink it if my life depended on it. If you had half the class you and your special needs chimp girlfriend claim to have, you would at least choose a single malt. Glenfidich is a poor example, but even that pisses on poor blended swill like Jonnie Walker. What do you do for special occasions? Crack open the Balentines? What a propper Charlie!

Johnnie Walker isn't a great whisky but the Green label is the best of the bunch. The blends are an intro into the world of whisky and are readily available, so looking down on those who drink stuff like Johnny Walker is a bit condescending. I realize you want to wind IPIC up, but there is a place in the whisky world for blends and those who drink them.

Umm maybe it's because they prefer the taste?

It could be. But for so many people to be recommending Islay malts, and in particular Laphroaig, would suggest they is more than just taste at play.

I generally prefer the peaty ones and Laphroaig seems to be the one of those I see around the most. At airports that is, which is basically the only place I buy spirits. I imagine if I lived in Scotland or the UK, I'd have tried a bigger variety. Or maybe not because they'd probably cost twice as much

maybe it's because nondescript blended scotches have been so popular for so long and normal people who aren't walking scotch bibles are starting to learn that there are other types of scotches.

i know i'm surprised but generally pleased whenever i meet someone these days who isn't a scotch aficionado persay but is familiar with lesser popular scotches from skye like talisker.

edited for brief moment of insanity

So your reasons would be taste and availability of that particular whisky.

Talisker is from Skye, it is not an Islay malt. A lesser known Islay malt would be Ardbeg or Lagavulin.

For me Laphroaig was love at first sip. Same with Suntory for beer, and Bulleit for bourbon. I'm not a hard core Scotch aficionado, in large part because I didn't have the fundage back home to buy more than the occasional bottle, and once I found Laphroaig, I stuck to that aside from some occasional glasses at the bar.

Highland Park is a good one, I mentioned that if the bar doesn't have Laphroaig, Highland Park 18 will do.

And yes, Green Label is a decent whiskey.

As for introduction, back in the broke days, I became a bit of an expert on cheap whiskeys- Evan Williams, Old Granddad, Old Crow, Early Times, Seagrams, Royal Canadian, Canadian Club, Canadian Mist, and my favorite- 10 High.

Anyways, this thread is really making me want to go drink...

Laphroaig is a good whisky (spell it right SR) but the fact it is run by the Beam company is a worry. The Beam company ran the Bruichladdich distillery into the ground before selling it. It seems Diageo are doing something similar with Talisker and Lagavulin. I used to love Lagavulin but now the consistency is shockingly poor. The same goes for Talisker.

Incidentally Bruichladdich are another Islay distillery well worth checking out. No colorings (which are used in most whiskies these days) and no chill filtering. They even do unpeated and peated varieties. Well worth a nip.

Michael Rennie was ill
The Day the Earth Stood Still
But he told us where we stand
And Flash Gordon was there
In silver underwear
Claude Rains was The Invisible Man
Then something went wrong
For Fay Wray and King Kong
They got caught in a celluloid jam
Then at a deadly pace
It Came From Outer Space
And this is how the message ran...

Science fiction (ooh ooh ooh) double feature
Doctor X (ooh ooh ooh) will build a creature

As a rule, I don't drink any whisky that doesn't sound Scottish or Gaelic.

Skye only has one distillery, and that be Talisker. I have to say, as much as i like Oban, and Talisker and even Dalwhinnie for all its sweetness, i much prefer an Islay malt. laphroaig is amazing, but Ardbeg is the daddy for me!

lol says the guy who went to Itaewon on a SATURDAY NIGHT! Makes a lot of sense for you to head out there when you hate crowds at all.

I don't have an issue with the costume thing as I went to college in the United States and pretty much everyone dresses up for it.
