Intent makes one an asshole dummy. Your intent was to be demeaning to someone looking for help. Good for you, mission accomplished.
Next, you made assertions that you can't come close to backing up. This also makes you an asshole. So, you can believe whatever you like about yourself, but the "truth" is, you're a horrible human being. Enjoy growing old and being alone. |
Assertion was backed up in one of your quoted passages. |
No, it wasn't. And you are still a douchebag. Enjoy living with that debilitating condition the rest of your life. I'm sure it will work out well for you. |

He's a douche, no reason to stoop as low as him though. |

To be fair, it was. Look through the poster in question's history and you will see it proved true.
At any rate, life as a normal person has worked out pretty well for me thus far. Enjoy continuing to worked up over the internet and skyrocketing that blood pressure there pal. |

| Based on your writing style, I highly doubt your accent is the reason you never had any luck in the interviews. |
I also failed an interview in Bundang purely based on my accent. Doesn't matter how good your English is. Korea is pretty much the 51st state of America. They want the American accent because for them it is a status symbol. I worked in Bundang for 3 years and I can tell you the place is full of Koreans with fake American accents speaking English as if they are somehow special.
Now with that said I do not think Korea is being given a fair review by Whitegirlinasia. I have never heard of anyone getting two sh*tty jobs in a row. I personally have had 4 different jobs in Korea and only one of them sucked. The other 3 were perfectly fine.
And let's not fool ourselves. It is not just in Korea where foreigners get screwed over. It happens all over the world. America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, everywhere. It is just the human condition to screw over those who are easy to screw over. And quite frankly foreigners in other countries get exploited a helluva lot more than us ESL teachers here in Korea.
So Whitegirlinasia I feel for you. You clearly have had a horrible experience in your almost 2 years in Korea and I am sorry to hear that. But your experience is not the norm. It is an exception.
Even though your complaints are valid I felt that I needed to add that little caveat. |

I wonder, too. Hopefully there will be a post-escape post from the OP in the future which will reveal all. As for the statement that "Korea is [not] being given a fair review" by the OP, well, of course. Exactly. Life is not fair, and this thread was opened for revealing an example of one such planetary inhabitant encountering a streak of misfortune. The unfairness is the valid point made in earnest by the OP. The subsequent dismissal of the ROK at large is just collateral damage derived from the nightmarish experiences, but not the point to be taken. However, given the general consensus regarding TEFL employment on this board of late, namely that:
1. job conditions are not getting better
2. salaries are not going higher
3. living expenses are going higher
4. job requirements are getting stricter
it thus follows that seeking escape from the ROK is rational. Whitegirlinasia took a runner, but in light of the rapid demographic fall in the ROK, the future employment outlook is bleak, so ironically the OP just got ahead of the outbound flow of foreign bodies. I assure you, there will be a lengthening queue at the airport departures going forward from 2016. Happy New Year! |

In the end I collected my paycheck on the Monday before my great escape. I had to go to work Tuesday to return the company phone which I had because of phone teaching.
Exboyfriend thought it ridiculous to go to work 3 days for free. The apartment wasn't fully packed up. So he called my job and told them an intricate story about how we had been hit by a taxi while on our way to see a movie. I had a busted up arm and needed to stay in the hospital until the weekend but I'd be back to work on Monday.
They didn't even ask if I was okay. They just complained about having to find a sub.
I packed up my stuff. We took a trip to see some temples and buddhist stuff.
I took all of the money out of my bank account. Saturday we went out to breakfast and then he drove me to the airport where I happily handed in my ARC and boarded a plane to PDX.
Exboyfriend stayed behind to deal with the furniture (which is bought when we were living together, and is therefore his). But he got really drunk and lost his car keys. So he was still there Monday when I sent the email to my boss that I had quit and was in America.
They came to the apartment and ran in to exboyfriend. So ensued a Korean screaming match. They called my phone over and over and over. Then I got an email threatening to report exboyfriend for the offense of kidnapping me. I sent exboyfriend photos of my ticket stubs in case, but I assumed that it was an empty threat, as proving I am in America is very simple.
As for the dog, Comet is still in Korea living with exboyfriend. Because airlines don't accept dogs as cargo during the holiday season it was impossible to take him with me. I have to hire a service to ship him. It costs 1,000 bucks. He has to live in one country for 6 months in a row in order for him to move with me to Japan (where I previously lived 5 years) as they are a rabies free country. The $50 blood test to prove he is clean costs $600 in Korea because the Japanese government doesn't like Korea. They require that Korean vets freeze and send the blood to America to get certified. Plus I would have to go back to Korea to pick the dog up. So all together it costs about $1,000.
I haven't decided which course of action to take. Jobs start in April in Japan and I miss my poor mutt a lot. He was the one great thing that happened to me in that awful place. If anyone is going to PDX or Seattle or any other airport near there, if you courier the dog for me, it would only cost $250 and I'd pay all the fees and throw in $100 (negotiable) for your trouble.
I am done with ESL for good. I'm dusting off my N2 certification for Japanese, brushing up on my Kanji, and will be looking for any job that isn't children and for profit education. 6 years of it was enough.
Oh, and I will be receiving my pension at the end of February. Huzzah.
Thank the Lords of Kobol it's over. |
