Just asking, but why do you care if they do? Were you not hired as an English teacher?

You have set your self a long line to keep the slack out of.

i care because i can.

i was hired as a high school teacher who teaches english. i should try to educate them in every way possible and if that means punishing them for doing something wrong... so be it.

it is hard because i get very little time with them but that doesn't mean i should just let them get away with everything..

think about your teachers in high school.. we are in korea but high school is high school.

Well, I won't push this anymore, but I don't think your position is in any way comparable to high school teachers in Canada.

it should be.. i am in a position to influence these kids everyday... i like to think that things that i do may help them in the future..

maybe i am not seen in the same way as a korean teacher but i am their mouthpiece.. when somebody does something wrong and i take them to a korean teacher they start begging me for mercy..

have you taught in a high school in korea? it is surprisingly similar to a highschool back home. well, mine is anyway.

Wylde, I for one think it's great that you care about your students. I just hope that your frustrations don't drive you to the point that you stop caring.

The worse the situation, the harder your work.

I am also happy you care, and I totally see the point you are trying to make.

It's better you vent here than give up on what you are doing. Be hard on your students. It is a wonderful opportunity for them to be exposed to Western concepts.

Even if the 75% end up hating you, the 25% that are good have their belief in honesty enforced, and may end up being successful immigrants someday, or spouses to foreigners, or decent hagwon bosses, or great co-teachers.

We won't change the system. We may influence a small percentage and that is a victory of sort. It has too start with parents and educators realising that there is a problem. The article about the unis was in the Korea Times Zed and Real Reality has posted a couple of interesting articles on Koreans proclivity for cheating, including an excellent one of them using two way radios to pass exams. Sad, but true. Smile

Could you provide a source for this information? This may come in handy when trying to convince a supervisor to be more serious about this issue. Then again, it may not.
Korea Times? Could you tell me approximately when. I would like to check it out.

The simple solution would be to just stop bringing the damn choco pies. Am I the only one that saw this resolution instantly? This would solve all of your problems and save you some dough. Shocked

There is definitely cheating among high school students back home, but we will never know the actual amount of cheating that is occuring, because (and correct me if I'm wrong) teenagers back home have the presence-of-mind to make sure the teacher is not looking, if not out of the room completely before leaning over and eyeballing their buddy's f***ing test paper. This is how I remember it being when I was that age. Korean students are about as slick as a pile of tar paper. I just sit there and stare at them when I catch them in the act - partly out of a desire to convey anger, but mostly out of pure disbelief. Dummies, the lot of them.
