Sogang. It's not great, but it keeps me employed until I find something better. Still, not bad all things considered. |

Congratulations.
So, who did you replace?
Was the position created for you? If not, why did the previous foreigner leave? Are you keeping the revolving door swinging?
I suppose your Korean employer saved some money.
Foreign instructors tend to be treated as hired hands, without academic standing, and lacking the possibility of career advancement or tenure. They must submit to yearly contracts (compensated at a rate only 60 percent of their Korean peers)....

Thanks for the congratulations RR. You're right, it's not the best position in the world and definitely not the best one in Korea. But I am working on another job that would be much better. However, because that job is so much better, the application process takes several months. I can't just sit around in a love motel until the application process is over, so I took a job that pays well considering the hours that I am working. |

Ajuma,
I am sure prosodic and Zyzyfer will be welcomed in their Korean places of employment in 10 years. |
I don't want to work anywhere in Korea for 10 years, so I don't care what some 70 year old dude in Hyundai makes compared to me. I'll be lucky to stay 2 years at my current job, let alone 10, because this line of work just doesn't interest me.
Go paint your dirty pictures elsewhere. Like I said before, you're making quite a few rampant assumptions about what I desire from working in Korea. |

And have very little of the responsibility of a 'real' professor, very rarely are able to communicate in Korean or contribute in any way to the school in which they work beyond their classes. |

I'll be finishing my PhD in a few years, and seriously thinking about coming back to Korea to (for once and for all) find out whose right in this debate.

And some foreign professors advise and help international students just like the "real" professors. In fact, due to the lack of maintaining a constant foreign faculty, some foreign professors teach twice as much as Korean professors while also contributing to the school.
Have you ever seen how Korean professors perform advising duties? |

I never like when people insist on comparing themselves to Korean professors. I don't have a graduate degree let alone a PhD. I don't have to attend conferences. And the big one: I didn't have to pay a couple of years salary as a bribe to get my position. |

Beaver,
Do you teach at a university? Why? Who is responsible for the hiring? Why hire someone without a graduate degree?
I know you are not a migrant worker or factory worker. However, consider the following:
Legal exploitation of migrants in South Korea
In Korea the minimum wage is 40 percent of the Korean national workers' average wages.Compared to Korean workers, migrant workers usually get 60-70 percent, but migrant workers transferred from overseas factories get only 10-20 percent.

Education Ministry officials said Korean professors and university authorities are still reluctant to embrace foreigners as faculty members.
