Well, I'm not American but if I were to live in the States again I'd probably live in California. Not that California is that special. Nice weather but I don't find much else appealing about it. I'd probably only live there because I have some good friends there.

Somewhere in the northeast might be alright for awhile. Chicago maybe. Probably not northwest though. I'd rather live in Vancouver. Otherwise, there are a few places I'd like to visit. Sante Fe, St. Louis (that arch fascinates me) but I'd never live there.

The last time I lived in the US, it was San Francisco. Great city that I always wanted to live in.. but thats about the extent of it now.. those days are past me.. and no interest to go back to San Francisco.

Chicago.. uggh.. grew up in Michigan.. its our second big city (Michigan for the east coast Michiganders) and Chicago for the west coast Michiganders. Can't stand the weather.

Santa Fe would be interesting but extremely expensive almost to the degree that California is expensive.. Las Cruces is pretty cool though.. in southern New Mexico. I'd consider there or possibly El Paso, TX for the same NM reasons.

I went to El Paso once just to get out of Corpus. I was at university for the summer and everyone I knew had gone back home save for 3 people who were all busy that weekend. I randomly decided to get in my car at 8pm on a Friday night drove for 8 hours. Spent the night in Sonora, Texas and drove another 8 hours to El Paso. I had no reason to go so once I got there I just went to the mall and then drove around downtown El Paso.

Then since I needed to get my oil changed (I should've changed it before but it was 8pm on a Friday) I drove to Las Cruces and went to Wal-Mart (I didn't see any places on the main road in El Paso) and had it changed there and then drove another 16 hours to get back to Corpus. I spent the night in Sonora again but this time at a cheaper place whose rates I saw leaving the night before.

I also had a strange experience at some checkpoint. They stop all the cars looking for illegal aliens and drugs (I'm assuming). It looked mighty suspicious that I had driven 16 hours to go somewhere for absolutely no reason (aside from my own strange desire to drive through the desert). They checked my car and probably still thought I was hiding something. It was probably also weird that I had a car (registered in my name) with Texas plates and an Alberta driver's license.

Anyways, that's my random El Paso-Las Cruces story. I wouldn't want to live in either of those cities. Maybe if I had done something else. They just felt so isolated (a 16 hour drive probably made it feel much more so). It probably adds to their charm and everything but I'd probably go insane.

Chicago I only said because it's large and downtown Chicago looked nice. I was there once for a weekend on another escape from Corpus. Honestly, though I'm only harsh with Corpus Christi because it was such a downer after my year abroad where I'd made much better friends than i did in Texas. I didn't mind my first 2 years that much. The last year though, I just felt like a prisoner.

I just thought I'd mention that even though the average house in Corpus is cheaper than elsewhere the houses are also a lot smaller. Of course, Canadian homes are just larger because we are trapped there for about 8 months a year.I've got to quit rambling on like this.

Corpus Christi and the rest of south Texas is the only place I know where you can drive all day and not get out of the state,

'less you're going to Mexico.

I'm from Texas and always wanted to be a beach bum. Galveston and Port Aransas are places I spent spring breaks.
I would worry about the hurricane thing in recent years, though. We got pounded by Ivan as far inland as Fort Worth.

Anyway, New Braunfels and San Marcos, just a couple of hours away, have the most awesome
spring-fed rivers. The snorkeling and tubing/rafting/kayaking is incredible.

Gotta mention the camping in state parks, too. Clean, good facilities, excellent staff, comfortable, spacious
(you won't bother your neighbor and vice versa.)
Take care, the raccoons are amazing. They will get your food out of any container, and aren't shy about it.

Texas is the place to be.

I liked Port Aransas a lot when I finally went to Corpus Christi.

Corpus itself was very industrial with a lot of pollution coming out of the oil refineries while driving on the major highway coming into the city.

Once I was downtown, I really liked the downtown feel. Not a lot of people around during the wintertime, but had a feeling like other times there would have been a lot.

The beaches are pretty cool (I thought). At least it has ocean and sand. Although granted, Florida or California are much better overall. Still, enjoyed CC enough though.
