| Connor Purcell? That name sounds very familiar. Didnt he write a story that turned out to be a huge lie? |

| The Seoul Times depends mostly on volunteer writers, thus they probably use just any schmuck who wants to write. |

Funny, because I have.
Actually, I met a man who was here for 15 years as a teacher and was a visiting professor. He left because of all the bad stuff that happened regarding the ES incident.
I know the article is not backed up by any factual data, but the general atmosphere that it expresses is still present.
And if you DO go to the Naver and Daum sites, you will see more than a few sites that are rather xenophobic in nature. I even saw an anti-foreign rally in the Chongno 3-ga subway station, telling people to stay away from the institutes in the area until the mess was all fixed (one even asked if I worked at one of them, I gleefully said no )
I think it was near the No. 1 line entrance 2 weeks ago on a Thursday, if you were there and can remember seeing it, thats my proof |

As a former journo, I can say that levels of exploitation in the industry are high.
Everyone wants to be a journalist. And theres no shortage of young hacks willing to submit copy after copy for free, indefinitely, to newspapers who seem to promise jobs that never quite materialise... A lot of stuff in papers is written by aspiring journos, who are starving.. |

Not hard to believe that many koreans would rip on foreigners. You only have to look at this thread to see how many people are ripping on Mr. Purcell. People like belitting others, it makes them feel better about their own insignificant lives I guess.
|
When I read an article, I form an opinion about its quality, and sometimes discuss my opinion with others who have also read the article. Same when I read a book, see a movie, hear a song, etc.
Since when does having an opinion about the things you read qualify as "belittling others"? |

Just remember as xenophobic as South Korea gets it still pales in comparison to North Korea
I havent noticed any difference in the way Koreans treat me. I dont think its the Koreans that have necessarily changed....its the defensive foreigners who are paranoid from their ganja smokin ways that seem a little more paranoid than usual. |

| Where are all these anti-foreigner Koreans? Where are all these attacks? What in f's name is Spectrumgate? I've been here nearly 3 months now without any beatdowns. Damn I feel discrimated in not being sufficiently discriminated against..... |

The beginning, the middle and the end. It could be possible to write a "Korea's anti-foreigner these days" article that follows the basic rules of journalism. Connor's article is not that piece. There are few "facts" in the piece. Just opinions lacking any attributed quotes or references to support his hysterical claims. It's worse than the worst Korea Herald articles.
Korea's xenophobic? This isn't new. It's always been. No dispute from me there.
I won't speak of how it is this month - I've been gone since the summer - but when I left last summer Korea had improved by several orders of magnitude over how it was when I first arrived in 1996.
Yeah, things seem bad lately with the SBS show and Spectrumgate, but these things are cyclical, aren't they? Early 1998 IMF was bad. It then got better. Late 2002 "candlelight vigils" was bad. It then got better. Now it's bad again.
I don't think I'm going out on a limb to predict that it will get better again soon, if it hasn't already moved on to the Japanese. And then it will get bad again. Etc.
Precisely how many innocent foreign teachers have been lynched in the streets as a result of all of this in the last two months, anyway? Derrek, got a body count to offer? Hongdae must have been like Fallujah there these last few months, judging from the posts you've been making...
Korea's not going to hell in a handbasket. It's just being the same old tantrum-throwing, inward-looking Korea it's always been. It seems Mr Purcell doesn't let the truth get in the way of a good story.

My sentiments exactly.
And I'm into my third year here!
(Oh, except for immigration this January when I arrived back here. But that's another story.) |

The number of non-Asian visitors to South Korea is dropping. So too are the amount of businesses investing in South Korea.
That is as much due to the weakened currency as it is to South Koreas less-than-welcoming reputation. |

Actually the reference to 'weakened currency' refers to the US dollar.

Mr. shakuhachi,
It's possible your interpretation of the article is correct, but I don't think so. At best, the writer was unclear about what currency is weakened.
As most are aware these days, the US dollar is down, but business investment in Korea does not come from only the US. The writer appears to be a Brit and their currency is doing fine. The Japanese yen and the Euro are both doing fine. The Korean government is in a near frenzy about the rising won.
I still think the writer telling us much more about his fantasies than he is about the real current state of affairs in S. Korea. |

Your dead on!
It's funny. If I didn't read about these anti-Western sentiments in the paper or on the web, I would have no idea that a segment of the Korean population feels that way towards us.
In fact, these stories fuel my somewhat ignorant fears of living here, the same way they do to the Koreans and their anti-Western articles. It's some wierd karma ish going on. |

That's because it's a molehill in reality and a mountain on the net. Particularly here. When you take some paranoid foreigners, add the isolationary effects of being a visible minority in a very homogeneous and different culture. Add a pinch of the fact that a lot of these expats are not coming here with willing and open arms for a rich cultural experience, but for another kind of rich. Sprinkle in elements of language and cultural divides, plus the simple truths that not all foreigners are free of their own personal hang-ups as soon as they step of the plane, and add an underlying, subtle dash of 'I read it on the internet, so it must be true', then you will have a tasty recipe for overblown hype. |
