That's a very North American attitude RR. The kids do crazy stuff like walk along window ledges to clean the windows at school all the time. The Korean teachers don't bat an eye at it.

this is my chance to rant. Twisted Evil

when I was a kid, i could amuse myself for hours (literally).

sometimes i get annoyed that my son is so unable to do the same. for example, when the time comes to organize his things, i throw away very few of his "dismembered" toys because i remember so well, building my own mutant toys, houses/forts, etc. so far, this goes unappreciated by him. Confused

kids these days seem to lack imagination. i blame technology.

I can see how this is a concern for some parents. At my school there are a few kids that seem very poor. I suspect one less school day might equal one less meal for the kids and that's not a good thing at all.

On the flip side of that, I think some posters are overlooking something important. Kids don't need their parents to constantly entertain them and they don't need to spend money to be amused. Most kids enjoy a game of tag with their friends which is free, at least as much as a trip to a museum. Let them play dressup with your old clothes, make a fortress out of the kitchen table and a blanket. Let them use their imagination and just be kids!

That's what you would do. That's what I would do. That's what our parents did, I would bet. And that's also what most Korean mothers will say if asked for their opinion. Problem is, that's not what many of them do once the camera's off. From all I've seen, they just can't seem to control the overpowering urge to regiment & schedule their kids' days and lives to pieces. They're conforming with what their parents did and what parents today do. It often seems like "fun" here is planned, scheduled and performed with military-drill precision if the parents have anything to say about it.

You mean a commonsense attitude towards safety is distinctly "North American"? Hmmm, looks like the North Americans are on to something. Smile
