1. The Department of English Education at ... has a job opening in teaching EFL (one-year contract and renewable for 3 years). The salary offered is commensurate with experience. Applicants should send a c.v., sealed transcripts, and two letters of recommendation...

2. The contract is for a year, renewable up to 6 years. The university pays a monthly salary of about 2 million won per month, which is about 1,800 USD. The salary however varies depending upon individual qualification and professional experience....

Just for the record. I have inside info about Ewha University and they used to renew contracts forever. Currently there are a few teachers approaching 10 years. However, apparently, as of this year and the new director they will only renew contracts for three years. Alot of teachers are going to be looking for work.

so, all this talk about the 3 year rule has kind of died out. Did anyone ever find out if it was real or just a rumor?

In the last few months there have been various news articles about the pending changes in the labor law regarding irregular workers. The legislation has been delayed because of opposition by the labor unions who say it will only increase the number of irregular workers. I seem to recall reading that after 3 years as irregular workers, workers would have to be promoted to regular status. The article was a little vague so I'm not sure the exact details or whether it would apply to the foreign staff at universities, but it might be related.

Yeah, it's true. Do what you can to survive because you're going to get fired for being a filthy foreigner.
