Ever eaten in Spain? My god!!! Talk about bland!!! The only things I really liked were the tapas. Paella? Talk about torture!!! Pure grease with no flavor whatsoever. It's hard to believe what my mother called Spanish probably is a bastardized version of paella.

But in a different area of Spain I'm sure they had better food.

Anyway, I live Americanized Chinese... and real Chinese.

I love the Americanized/Tex Mex versions... but have also had fabulous food in Mexico or in authentic restuarants in the US.

LA galbi, btw, absolutely sucks.

Thai food in the US? Similar to what we do to Chinese. Thai food in Thailand is a different creature. Love both.

Etc., etc.

It's (almost) all good.

Totally agree with Spain food.. I lived there last year.. and man, I did not like that stuff at all!

Regarding Americanized-versions of ethnic foods.. VIETNAMESE.. the best Vietnamese restaurants I've ever had were in New York and San Francisco.. but the two times I went to Vietnam.. I just couldn't find anything anywhere that even remotely compared to my NY/SF Vietnamese likings.

I agree, the best vietnamese i've had was in California and not Vietnam.

i really struggle trying to cook two of my mexican faves at home: carne asada and pollo asado. partly i think i'm not marinating correctly - i've had it end up far too bland, too citrus, too salty, or too oily.

the other problem i think is that i'm basically frying instead of grilling....yet all my efforts still taste much better than any of the korean owned places i've tried so far (although urbanos over in gangnam was pretty damn close...), and by far much cheaper.

guess i'm just homesick.

Mexican food is Mexicanized Spanish food that came about due to the Conquistador's from Spain many moons ago. It is very tasty. While I thought authentic Mexican food was the hottest and spiciest stuff on Earth, I find Korean food to be the most red hot on fire stuff. How do you taste and enjoy the ingredients with it being so hot? Guess hot spicy food eaters just love to set their mouths on fire.

There is a common ground between authentic Mexican food and Korean food which is the use of many red hot chili peppers. Mexican food outside of Mexico is very tasty, but in Mexico, it's red hot fire like many Korean foods in Korea. Now if you go to a Korean restaurant in the states, it's highly likely that you will find it tastier and more gourmet quality than what you typical get in Korea.

What is with all the deep analytical sh.it?

1.) Cheese
2.) Meat
3.) Bread
4.) Spices

The 4 best things on earth, all in one cuisine. What is there to debate?

speaking of analytical, had a prof go on a rant about the tortilla as a weapon.

light and easy to carry, so the aztecs could easily just forage around wherever while on a war campaign, then throw it onto a tortilla and have a nice little taco or two.

kinda like what i've heard about mongolians using their helmets as cooking pots (thus inventing hotpot).

Some Thai food is physically painful in the first bite. I find Korean, while quite spicy in its own right (I love a nice 돼지갈비찜), is no where near as spicy as Thai.

HOW does a small 3rd world country create such a wide range of consistently awesome food.

3rd world countries tend to suffer from food shortages so historically they had to go to the effort of inventing cool stuff to favour/marinate it in to disguise that the meat was piss poor quality.

Probably why Indian and Thai food is varied and tasty while European food (French and Italian aside) is bland.

i've had the potato burrito. you're right, not bad - ironically better than most of the meat items on the menu and tastes more like what i'm used to back home.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=california+burrito

total b@stardized american junk food, but i miss it anyway.
