You can call it democracy if you want.

But I tend to agree with ChimpumCallo that Latin Americans tend to elect idiot after idiot, at least in certain contries, and there is no method to their madness.

Isabel Peron became president because she was Juan's wife.

Fujimori was elected partly on people nodding their heads yes and saying "those Japanese really know how to run things."

Ecuador's Bucaram, in office 1996-1997 who went by the nickname "el loco" and, apart from inviting Lorena Bobbit over for a highly-publicized dinner date, is best known for creating the conditions that brought down his own presidency in Feb. '97, when he had to flee to Panama.

I cannot explain how Chavez, Morales, or Lula won office, either.

They've got relatively stable systems in place in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Chile. The rest is a chaotic mess, especially Venezuela -- and, by the way, the Venezuelan president may hate the U.S., but every Venezuelan I know, the ones living in Chile to flee the madness there, hate and fear Chavez more. They think he is ruining their country.

He IS. After Chavez was elected there was a HUGE influx of Venezuelans in Miami. Venezuelans with perfect lives and beautiful homes in Caracas just wanted to get the hell out. Anyone that could get out did....the country is being destroyed....and this whole 'people power' thing is creating a bigger rift between white and indian than anything else before. There is intense hatred on both sides fueled by Chavez for his own political gain.
