From my experience watching animals..
Croc vs hippo:
i saw a croc trying to drag a zebra into the water once, it was a bit big for it. However, bizarrely, a nearby hippo took exception to the disturbance, and attacked/lunged at the croc, which then released the zebra...
cat vs dog:
I used to have a cat: One time I saw it cornered by a dog which was barking at it..whereupon it launched itself onto the larger dog, scratching its head and eyes, before vaulting off its back and scaling the nearest tree...so brains can conquer brawn. |

While I find the idea of pitting wild animals against eachother in highly unnatural conditions, for entertainment, repulsive and cruel, (i'm not going to watch the 2 videos posted earlier),what happens when two animals encounter eachother in the wild is a legitimate interest.

It was called "Animal Face-Off".
I was addicted. It was my all-time favorite Discovery Channel show.
(I don't get Discovery in my new apartment   )
The first show was "Lion Vs. Tiger".
Physically, they're basically the same animal. The only significant difference is that male lions have a mane. Even though it's only hair, it can help deflect bites to the back of the neck (which is one way that both lions and tigers kill their prey). Also, tigers are loners, while lions live in prides. Male lions have to defend their harems from other male challengers, so they get a lot of experience fighting.
In the end, the fighting experience and the protective mane of the lion gave it the edge.
The grand finale of the series was "Sperm Whale Vs. Giant Squid".
(Did you know that a sperm whale's sonar can be a significant sonic weapon? It's what gave the sperm whale the victory. That's what I loved about the show -you actually learned something in addition to watching a virtual brawl.) |

I would also say that tigers rely on the element of surprise in catching prey: concealment, ambush, and suddenly springing on prey, a forest animal. As a species, they have less stamina than lions which are used to chasing and running down prey over distance.Also, although smaller than tigers, lions have a stockier and more powerful build, I heard somewhere that in actual encounters, Lions won 8 times out of 10.
What a beast.

He is a cute little fella isn't he? I was going to mention him..

this is very common, in fact, the usual result
i saw on a nature show how crocs avoid hippos like the plague because the hippo is one of the most threatening animals in africa: even local people know to stay far away from them... not a single african animal will even challenge a hippo, and hippos have killed crocs, lions, and several other big beasts that have disturbed them: they can be very aggressive, especially defending their own. elephants shuffle away from them.
so it's worth repeating for those who may be "surprised" at how tough hippos could be...
hippos are the true kings of africa
the toughest animal in terms of not being able to be pushed around!!!!!!
(despite silly cultural beliefs based on looks)

i would have to vote for the cockroach. we could nuke the planet 100 times, and they would continue to live. cant say the same for almost all other forms of life...
i dont think a hyena or polar bear can live with its head cut off...
and how many millions (or billions) of years have they been around, compared to humanity... |

Hyenas are the scum of the animal kingdom.
They gang up on a couple of young females to take the lionesses' food...
but come the light of day they are individually weaklings chased down and easily destroyed.
No wonder some people are called hyenas! |

i'm the toughest animal in the world. i have personally destroyed many c0ckroaches, and i'm alive to tell the tale. there have been some fierce battles, mind you, but to date i've got an unblemished record. |
