Indeed Myth,
That excerp from Yum's post is pretty much on target.
I alos love the "what you hear from people" argument that gets tossed out everytime it is Korea bash time on here.
Gotta love backing up your opinion with hearsay and making completely ridiculous statements like "Korea is the worst country in the world", "people teaching in other countries are so much happier" and so on (I was paraphrasing by the way...not quoting).
No reasonable person can say Korea (or any other place for that matter) is perfect. In fact, it becomes a question of positives vs negatives and of general outlook. I think Korea has its flaws (it has in fact many of them) but I realized early on that this is not much different from many other places I have lived that magically had their flaws and advantages. Korea just fits for me and I am happy here. Is it "better" than say Canada? Stupid question as the answer could only be highly subjective and colored by my very own preferences and prejudices. It is also quite true that often enough Korea gets the blame from unhappy teachers while they quickly forget to look at the first place they should have looked: the mirror. |

I have also noticed salaries going up. I had an interview this last week with a hagwon in Mok-dong (near Omokyo Station) and the director was complaining about it.
I've been here two years, and the best he would offer me is 2.15.
I stood up, shook his hand and wished him luck as I walked out the door.

Homer, read your last post to yourself with Rod Serling's voice and The Twilight Zone's tinkling, zooming in, zooming out, oscillating soundtrack. Rod Serlings's deadpan voice saying, 'the answer being the last place most disconcerted esler's would ever look (da da da dum), the mirror'.
Your posts are so consistently, relentlessly sensible I swear they keep my bowels moving, like Quaker Oats. |

| Well, I just applied for a teaching position yesterday and today I received an email from the person in charge of hiring, saying that she is reviewing resumes and will get back to short-listed interviewees by May 12th. So, there must not be too much of a shortage. |

Me, too. I have finished 4 contracts in Korea, and a joker only offered me 2.1. I signed a contract and then he changed his mind about hiring me at the last minute, so I had to return to the states with no new job lined up. I was only supposed to be in the states 3 weeks and start this new job. Now, 2 months and still looking. |

Instead she could have said "we are desperate to hire you..oh, by the way name your price"
Are you really as dumb as your posts indicate? |

Yes, I guess I was stupid to sign a contract like that, but hey, it would have been better than being jobless for months. Some money coming in is better than zero comig in, huh? |

| I wouldn't say a shortage. I just finished hiring someone for Aug. I had plenty of people to interview and plenty of people to choose from. I will be doing this again for next March. Hopefully, it won't be that difficult. |
