Heres the difference. While both may quite possibly be overrated, at least Nirvana lead the movement |
Translation: was the first to sign to a major label... ?
The first to have a hit single, make a video?
Sold the most t-shirts?
Is that the definition of leading a musical 'movement', the first to "sell-out"?
I'm not taking a hard stand on the above; for example, I don't claim to know who sold the most t-shirts, and I don't even know who signed a major deal first (I'm not really a fan of either band), I'm just pointing out that your vague justifcation "at least Nirvana lead the movement" could be parsed in so many ways...
And I see in your response to Satori that you are now an authority on evaluating song lyrics...
What If I told you that was Bob Dylan's favorite Pearl Jam song?
Hmmm, that probably wouldn't make an impression on you, let's see...
What if I told you that was Bono's favorite Pearl Jam song?

No matter what Jinju says....it is not to be disputed that Pearl Jam...as a group put significant thought and effort into their lyrics. These are an example.....from a song I really dig.
"Love Boat Captain"
Is this just another day,... this god forgotten place?
First comes love, then comes pain. Let the games begin,...
Questions rise and answers fall,... insurmountable.
Love boat captain
Take the reigns and steer us towards the clear,... here.
It's already been sung, but it can't be said enough.
All you need is love
Is this just another phase? Earthquakes making waves,...
Trying to shake the cancer off? Stupid human beings,...
Once you hold the hand of love,.. it's all surmountable.
Hold me, and make it the truth,...
That when all is lost there will be you,...
Cause to the universe I don't mean a thing
And there's just one word I stil believe
And it's
It's an art to live with pain,... mix the light into grey,..
Lost 9 friends we'll never know,.. 2 years ago today
And if our lives became too long, would it add to our regret?
And the young, they can lose hope cause they can't see beyond today,...
The wisdom that the old can't give away
Hey,...
Constant recoil...
Sometimes life
Don't leave you alone.
Hold me, and make it the truth,...
That when all is lost there will be you.
Cause to the universe I don't mean a thing
And there's just one word that I still believe and it's
Love,... love. love. love. love.
Love boat captain
Take the reigns,.. steer us towards the clear.
I know it's already been sung,... can't be said enough.
Love is all you need,.. all you need is love,..
Love,.. love,...
Love. |

So much thought went into which song to plagiarize, eh? In the end they chose to rip off the Beatles?

I probably have a favorite PJ song. Its like saying that you have a favorite Zastava model (those are Yugos for those who dont know). Doesnt make Zastava a great car manufacturer, now does it? |

You forget the line that prefaces 'All you need is love' it's "It's already been sung, but it can't be said enough"
An obvious kickback to the original artists. Pearl Jam has payed tribute to the Beatles before as well as many other artists. They're recognized and liked by Dylan, The Ramones, The Doors.....they've also done quite a bit of collaborative work with Neil Young. Does he suck? |

So its ok to plagiarize something as long as you beat others to the punch and admit it?
As far as the Doors go, it made me puke, as a Doors fan that VEDDER sung with them at the HoF. Thats probably where my hate for all things PJ comes from. That was like pissing on Morrison's grave to have a no talent hack like Vedder sing with the Doors. |

Jeez....guess you've never heard of a cover song huh I think it's pretty obvious that when you admit to a line in that fashion...it's more homage to a great song and band than it is plagiarism.
As for The Doors.......for such a huge Doors fan you'd think that you might be accepting of the decision they made to perform with Vedder. A performance that went well and received near universal acclaim from what I've read. |

Everytime I hear Nirvana it reminds me of getting mugged in Edmonton - and that having long hair in 1995 was not cool unless it was a mullet...
Everytime I hear Pearl Jam it reminds me of why group highfives for album covers are just wrong...and why MotherLoveBone, Soundgarden, and Temple of the Dog were much better pursuits....
I would say Nirvana because of their raw energy, and the fact I can still find myself humming to them if they are playing....they seem more timeless, catchy.... |

| It's not exactly true that all grunge is just Black Sabbath riffs recycled. Im not particularly moved by grunge as a movement, but one thing they did do was bring in a couple, not a lot but a few, genuinely new chord progressions into the guitar rock lexicon. |

Some of it is from the Beatles, some of it is from Hendrix, some of it is from Sabbath. But, in the end, it's all pentatonic scale. |

Pearl Jam has been consistently cranking out good music that gets better with each album. |
I wouldn't go that far. I personally thought Binaural was pretty piss poor.
And while I do think their latest album is very good, I can't say it is one of their top 3 albums.

| other than the fact that they both came from the same time and place, they're really not very similar bands stylistically. |

Vedder is infinitely more talented than Morrison ever was. |

A gross simplification that doesn't even come close to describing the reality. What's your background in music theory? |
