I'll soon find out if it's possible to go home again - "home" to Korea, that is. I did 1.5 years in Korea and am just finishing up 3 years on JET in Japan. Non-JET jobs in Japan are shite (2.0 million won a month with no housing included? No thank you!) so I'm coming back to the ROK to try my hand again.

Can I cut the Kimchi in Korea after being among the obsequious (and often duplicitous) Japanese for so long? Stay tuned...

Not too muckin' futch to do here. After sex and eating a homemade or restaurant western dinner that's bland because of too much red pepper paste consumption in past meals... Not too muckin' futch to do here. Nowhere to fish except the goddamned ocean.

Everything is booooooooooooooooring!

People are boring.
Sex is boring.
Playing the guitar is boring.
The highway is boring.
Getting drunk is boring.
Soda's boring
Chips are boring.
Ramien is boring.
Dumplings are boring.
Saving money is boring.
The bus is really boring and you can't even take a leak on it.

Totally agree with all that, but the same applies everywhere if you want my opinion. It's staggering how much stuff sucks. That said, I do like Korea and I selected option 2 I think (ie. like it and could settle permanently if things go my way). Does get a bit boring after a while though. I need a sex, drugs and rock n roll vacation. Travelling is boring as fook as well though!

Lucky for you. (1) I've had ajumas pass to the other side of the street instead of passing a wae-guk on the sidewalk.

(2) I've had children refuse to get on the elevator with a wae-guk.

(3) I've had taxis rip me off for over 50,000 in excess of the fare.

(4) I've had taxis drive up and refuse to porter a wae-guk.

I've had more first-hand experience of racism than I ever saw dished-out in the Deep South. Koreans have one of the most homogenous and xenophobic cultures on the planet. One can expect a good deal of racism. When you add in their Confucian BS, where one doesn't even recognize you as a person until they've been introduced, and you have a pretty disgusting situation.

(5) People cut in front of you in line, push you out of the way, or interrupt you while you discuss issues with a clerk. People can't drive (the worst driving record in the industrialized world, in fact). An intensely nationalisitc culture steeped in sameness and conservative ideologies akin to 'red states'. Etc.

.

(numbers are mine)

1. Boo-hoo. You need to grow a thicker skin. So an adjuma passed to the other side of the street....I'd do the same if I saw you coming.

2. Oh really? Again boo-hoo. If children's opinions mean that much to you...you are in the wrong line of work.

3. And you accepted that? Stop being a victim!

4. There will be another taxi....funny in all my years here I've never had that happen. The colour of my money is the same as a Korean's.

5. Push back. If you accept this treatment and cravenly slink off to the side then I have no sympathy. Next time grab the pushy fellow by his lapels and roar into his face "DO YOU WANT YOUR HEAD REMOVED?" He may not understand English, but he will understand the tone. Works everytime.

You misunderstand. I'm not whining. I'm just expressing my opinion of my experience of Korea. I'm briefly explaining my observations of racism, and I'd bet many other foreigners have additional anecdotal experiences. I certainly noticed it a lot more in the Southern provinces than I do around Seoul. I found Gwangju especially notorious.

I'm not saying Korea is a crappy country. I'm saying I haven't found my stay here enjoyable in any capacity.

Your mileage may vary. Different strokes and all that.

Namaste.

Just out of curiosity, how long have you been here?

No motive behind the question. Just wondering.

Not quite 3 years. About 7 months left on this last extension. Smile

Namaste.

kiwiboy, I like women

Here is hermes.trismegistus's blog. He posted it earlier last year I think. Had to find it. I don't think he is a sock, which makes him even more "special" than I thought.

Don't get me wrong-while I disagree with the authenticity of what he says, and he is a bit of a peerick, and I don't agree with what he says, I still like his style-just nowhere near the kiwiboy quality
