Im not Canadian so i dont know many famous Canadians. But since Ive been in Korea I have been introduced to the "Tragically Hip" who I think are absolutely fab!......that guy Gordy can sing!.....Great voice.

I played some "Hip" to my friends back home in England. They all loved it but nobody knew them.....that's a damned shame.

Anyway, that is not why i'm contributing to this thread.....What bothers me is that in three pages of posts,no "English Teacher"has pointed out to the OP that imfamous is not the opposite of famous.

Adolf Hitler was famous and infamous.
....so is Celine Dion

The Tragically Hip are a decent band, but they are completely unknown outside of Canada. Kind of strange really, considering how popular they are inside of Canada.

One of the most famous Canadians of all is Anne Murray. Believe it or not.

Her and Kenny Rogers (country singers) are household names in Taiwan. Korea's different though.

Not exactly household names everywhere, but these are the Canuck Nobel Laureates.

Bert Brockhouse 1994 Physics
Michael Smith 1993 Chemistry
Rudolph Marcus 1992 Chemistry
Richard Taylor 1990 Physics
Sid Altman 1989 Chemistry
John Polanyi 1986 Chemistry
Henry Taube 1983 Chemistry
David Hubel 1981 Medicine
Gerhard Herzberg 1971 Chemistry
William S. Vickrey 1996 Economics
Myron Scholes 1997 Economics
Robert Mundell 1999 Economics
Saul Bellow 1976 Literature
Lester B. Pearson 1957 Peace

And of course Fredrick Banting who (along with fellow canuck Charles Best) is pretty well know for winning the Nobel Prize in Medicine (for discovering Insulin) back in 1923, a very valuable scientific discovery. There are some Canadian astronauts and you can guess who invented the Canadarm on the space shuttle. And of course, J.C. Fields (Mathematician, Fields Medal). Lots of other well-known scientists and academics.

Music: Nickelback, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Daniel Lanois (U2 and Bob Dylan Producer), Loreena McKennitt, Alanis Morissette, Brian Adams, Tragically Hip, Oscar Peterson, Rush, Hank Snow, Diana Krall, Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne, Paul Schaeffer (David Letterman) Sum 41 and lots of others.

Actors, TV, etc. Natalie Glebova (Miss Universe 2005), Margot Kidder (Superman), Pamela Anderson (Baywatch), Graham Greene, Lorne Greene, Mary Pickford ("America's Sweetheart"), Phil Hartman, Kiefer Sutherland, Donald Sutherland, Peter Jennings, Norm MacDonald (SNL), Glenn Ford, Keanu Reeves, Matthew Perry (Friends), Thomas Chong (Cheech & Chong), Michael Shanks & Amanda Tapping (Stargate SG-1), Margaret Atwood, John Kenneth Galbraith (economist), Monty Hall, Art Linkletter, Alex Trebek (game shows) Cirque du Soleil, Linda Evangelista (supermodel), Joe Shuster (creator of Superman) and of course, Jay Silverheels.

Sports: Steve Nash, Jacques Villeneuve (well, if Indy 500 and Formula One racing are 'sport'), Donovan Bailey (formerly the world's fastest man), Mary Pierce. The hockey list is just too long so I won't even bother. You know who they are.

Business: Jack Warner (Warner Brothers), Sir Samuel Cunard (Cunard Shipping Line), Louis B. Mayer (MGM Studios), The Bronfman family (formery Seagram's and Universal Studios), and of course the infamous Conrad Black. Bombardier is the world's third biggest airplane company and Blackberry, IMAX and ATI Graphics are examples of other Canadian companies.

Pretty damn good for a country less than 150 years old and only about 30 milion people. And they make a nice bottle of beer, too. Thing is, I found most Canadians to be so modest about their country's achievements. They could name off lots of their hockey players but only a few bothered to remember the names of their Nobel winners and such. When I mentioned it they'd usually say something like "Yeah another Canadian won a Nobel, big deal". I liked that modesty.

How about a list of Canadians that became famous in Canada and not the US?

Some Americans think the universe revolves around them.
You wouldn't be one of those by any chance, would you, Poofdiddy?

Why limit it to Canada and the US?

Here's one for the list:

Bai Qiu-en, AKA Norman Bethune.

Mary Pierce? That's a reach.... She was born here, but that's it. Both parents don't even have Canadian citizenship. At least Greg Rusedski played here until he was mid career before switching to the Union Jack. Other names....

Daniel Nestor (Olympic Gold and No. 1 doublesplayer in the world)
Ferguson Jenkins (Baseball Hall of Famer)
Larry Walker (Former MLB batting champ)
Paul Tracy (champion cart racer)
Mike Weir (Master's Champ)
Simon Whitfield (Olympic Chamipon Triathlete)
Lennox Lewis (Undisputed Heavyweight Champion - Boxing )

Many more..... just getting too late to name them

Maybe not opposite, but infamous has more of a negative tone to it than famous. I would refer to Hitler as being infamous and not famous. Also, even though I may not appreciate Celine Dion (her music), I would still refer to her as a famous person and not infamous. Actually, I'd probably refer to her as popular. Anywho....

actually, not at all. his main residence is Mississauga, where his mom lives. he moved to Canada age 9 (I believe), and did school there, and olympics for Canada. He went to the UK strictly for the money, somewhat like Hargreaves in Soccer. He puts on a fake accent, which switches to Jamaican if he's being interviewed from there. All in all, he has the most ties to Canada. But whatever, don't actually care about him. Gatti is better to watch, good old montreal boy.

The average F1 driver loses 5 kg in a 1 1/2 hour race. Can you tell me another athletic event that the participant loses that much weight due to extreme effort. Baseball Laughing Football Laughing

I have driven F3000 cars. It is beyond a doubt a sport. Try it and tell me you are not wasted after a race. Exhausted, bruised and sore as hell.

Have you ever had crazy sex? ... been in a bar room brawl ... torn down a house ... gone on a bender ... all the same results but I'd hardly consider them a sport.

I give racers great respect cuz what they do is incredibly difficult and physically demanding, but let's not sully the good word of sport.

Infamous describes an (notoriously) evil thing or person.....

Celine Dion, for inflicting her music on the world ,is evil personified in my book.

She is infamous
