Just all meet in Gurye and take a taxi to whereever you want to go, if you split it it wouldn't cost anymore than 5000 each
Thats what i did when i went there with a group of friends...we went the Piagol shelter route the 1st day(but I don't think you guys will) and we just told the taxi to go to Yongoksa....it took about 4 hours from there to the shelter.... |

jlb,
I am fine with meeting at the temple and it seems the shelters you named last time seem logical as for as resting places, they seem to be divided up nicely

Sounds good. So following jlb's plan, we meet at Hwaeomsa on Tuesday around 1:00 and hike to Nogodan Shelter (or Piagol Shelter for the more ambitious). Wednesday we hike to Pyoksoryong Shelter. Thursday we hike to Chibatmok Shelter. Friday we hike off the mountain and split.
I've been to Hwaeomsa twice now, and it is a fairly big place. There's also enough there to spend a half-hour looking around if you're interested. Does anyone have a good idea of how to meet up when we get there? We could pick something like the middle of the temple grounds or the first bench on the trail or the little bridge near the temple. Any ideas? |

| I may very well be the only person in Korea without a cell phone! I will take your numbers with me, though, so I can call you if we fail to link up. |

Cool, should we say the original plan but go instead to Nogodon Shelter the first night instead of Piagol. HeyDelores...would you still be up for making a reservation for the 4 of us?
Let's say main temple at 1:00ish. Hopefully we'd all be done perusing around and we can start hiking around then. I don't think it should be too hard to find the other 3 wayguks with hiking gear so hopefully it won't be a problem.
I will PM ya'll with my cell number.
As a side note, do any of the 4 of us have a decent map or are we hoping that the ticket office or whatever will have one? |

I'm happy to make shelter reservations for us on Monday (when I can be absolutely sure that someone who speaks Korean is nearby).
I do not have a map.
1ish sounds good to meet up and hit the trails. I will try to arrive earlier since I would really like to spend some time at the temple. Inspector gadget, do you still want to try to catch the bus together from Gwangju that morning? Do you know schedules or any other helpful information about that? |

Sounds good. I'll send you my cell number as well.
I have a good hiking topo map (in Korean). It is available for free at the tourist office outside of Hwaeomsa, but it might be closed for the holiday. I'll bring it along.
You can find more maps if you go here and search for 지리산. (This is also a good way to find maps for obscure areas. I've used it for hiking around Changwon and Jinhae.) |

hey delores,
It seems meeting at gwangju bus sation seems logical for the two of us so I will PM you on the details of bus departures, I will find out this weekend.
Seems that we wont have a problem finding each other at the temple site as we all have the same arrival time and I think its going to be very quiet during chuseok. |

Well, I called three different times to make shelter reservations, and each time, the person hung up on me, so I asked a Korean friend to call. This is what she told me at the end of her 15-minute conversation with the people at the park office:
We can't make reservations for Oct 4 and 5 until tomorrow and Wed. They had two rooms available at Nogodan, each one holds three people. We booked both. The cost is $30 per room. (That seemed high for a shelter to me. What do you think?) Apparantly the shelter is pretty full, even though today was the first day you could make reservations.
If this sounds good to you, we'll also call tomorrow and Wednesday to book the other two days.
Also, I'm wondering what you all think about taking the rest of our planning off this forum and do it by email instead. |

Wow,
I didn't think they would be so booked but the mountains are a place the koreans like to be.
Sounds a little expensive, there website says its cheaper but its likely just out of date.
Ya book them, I also have bus info for you I will PM you.

Don't worry about the price, just book it all and we'll figure it out when we get there I guess!
Thanks for doing this. |
