waggo, junior, happeningthing,

THis is a steve irwin thread. If you really want to argue with me about vegan related things, pm me. Or, go here: http://veganforum.com/forums/index.php

Not only do you enter someone's RIP thread and call him a hypocrite, you then tell people when they defend his views to do it somewhere else. Normal fundamentalist logic. People wonder why vegetarians are shunned.

Steve was a great guy. Such enthusiasm. Maybe he was crazy, but I couldn't care less. Also, he did everything possible for what he believed in. I hope they create a fund with his name and use it to continue benefiting the environment. My sympathies go to his family. RIP

Wow. How the heck did he manage to swim down on one of those things hard enough to puncture his ribcage and also his heart? I know most claims adjusters would say this is just the sort of thing that was bound to happen to him...but it''s STEVE IRWIN man!!! That dude dodged tons of crocs with lightning reflexes, survived tons of bites, and dozens of other misadventures that would've killed a lesser man...and he swims TOO CLOSE to a stingray and it jabs him in the heart???

I wonder if there's any reason someone might have wanted him dead?

Heres the creuture that was involved: Bull ray (Dasyatis brevicaudata). Large, up to 2.5 m across. Described as "almost as impressive as the manta ray, but less curious".

He was a nutter (see: baby meets croc incident) and living on borrowed time (see: several near-death experiences), but I'll miss the hell out of his trademark mantra "Let's grab 'em by the TAAYLE!!"

The man is dead and will be missed. He was a living Australian icon. He was a larrikan, a bit of a galah at times, but he was an educator.

He tried to bring the unknown to the less informed. He was a loving father and husband. Mock the man if you feel you need to, but he was a hero to many.

I raise my beer to you Steve. You died doing what you loved. I hope I would be so lucky

Full respect to the guy but surely he must have been doing something incredibly stupid to get "stung through the heart" by a stingray.

Wild stingrays are not aggressive creatures and will usually flee when divers get too close for their comfort. I can only think that he must have been excessively harassing the creature in some way.

Still, sorry to see the guy go.

It's sad that he got killed by one of the very animals he wanted to protect. But, I saw an expert on CNN who said that stingrays will strike if someone acts like a predator around them (grabbing them, standing above them, etc). From what I saw on his TV show, he wasn't always very respective of animals personal space and often behaved as if he was a predator to show how animals would react if they felt threatened (to educate people to stay away from animals who displayed such behavior in the hopes that none, animal or people, got harmed).

one of the few guys you could admire for his love of life and general feeling that nothing really bothered him. I'm sure the talk shows will miss him, he was always a great guest wherever he went. I was shocked to hear the news.

from what my local news was saying he took a stingray barb to the chest.

I think that can go on the list of terrible ways to die.

Terrible ways to die? Awesome way to die! Give me the wrath of Nature over a slow and lingering death from cancer any day...

Si, OiGirl; I agree.

He obviously wasn't wearing sunblock...

That would have protected him from the harmful rays

All jokes aside, a sad day for Aussie

Ah, the vegan in microcosm: Bring something up inappropriately and name call, then declare that this is not the place for it, that "others" should go somewhere else. Sheesh.

Hey, someone else asked me why I considered him to be a hypocrite, so I answered. That simple. Then others started in on me. I gracefully bowed out because I didn't think this was the place, so I invited them to go elsewhere to discuss it with me. Had I continued by answering their posts, I would have been accused of hijacking the thread.

Edit: Oh yeah, and considering that no one actually pm'ed me, I think that they were only trollishly trying to get a rise out of me rather than actually wanting to have a conversation.
