Interesting how out of all the times Korea is compared positively to another country, how extremely often the supposedly 'worse' country is China!
Koreans spit on the street like nobody's business..
Then someone pipes up, its 10 times worse in China..
Koreans eat like pigs!
They've got nothing on the Chinese, says someone.
I think perspective is great. Those who have experienced life in other countries I'm sure can make sense of Korean life more easily in some ways with more points of reference...
On the other hand, the knowledge that there is a country who spits more, eats more messily etc. is not really that comforting.. Just makes me think I wouldn't really want to live in China! |

Excellent point!! My reference point is Brazil where I taught and Korea couldn't come in lower in every aspect except money. |

Korea is a very prosperous and well developed country with civilized behavior, efficient procedures, quality products, advanced technology, an impressive transportation system, almost unlimited product availability, low cost of living, beautiful scenery, safe streets, and little poverty.

Not really, I felt pretty safe. For what possible danger there might have been it was made up 100 fold by the women. I didn't have to worry about some adjosshi or idiot drunk young guys swearing or wanting to fight because I was dating a Brazilian girl. Not to mention for everyone 1 hot Korean girl there are 20 in Brazil and you don't have to put up with the crap, games and screwed up culture embedded in Korean women. |

What you're trying to say, MESL, is that Korea is SOFT! Mind you, MESL, you're well-travelled and have lived in other countries, but usually, at that point, someone chimes in...."well, I've lived in the African jungle with cannibals, and they were infinitely more civilized than Koreans! Then I moved to the Amazon and was shocked how well-mannered Amazonian tribes were compared to Koreans." I never respond to these posts because obviously these individuals have been either unfathomably unlucky in their experiences or are just making it up completely.
I too breathe a sigh of relief when I land at my beloved Incheon, knowing nobody is going to pester me, attack me, piss me off in any way, save for small irritations like people getting in my way or being too slow at something.
In my 17 months here, I've experienced TWO psychos that nearly ended up in blows. One guy was drunk as hell and it was slightly my fault he got pissed off because I took his business card with one hand (well, I didn't know back then) and the second time the guy was obviously mentally derranged.
If I'd led my kind of lifestyle in an English-speaking country (going out regularly, getting wasted, shagging birds, being an arse sometimes) I'd have seen much, much more trouble in 17 months than here.
The most hostile, irritating place in South Korea is Emart. That's how easy and SOFT Korea is. I know this view isn't popular, but sadly folks will just have to stick it up their arse if they don't like it.....if you think Korea is bad, you are an absolutely pathetic wuss. |
