You've teased out the issue exceptionally well and it is precisely this kind of self-indulgent sense of public entitlement that offends many of us who consider ourselves supporters of the arts. Giulani's stance had nothing to do with ideology. Indeed, as a shrewd politico, he probably would have much preferred to have the whole controversy go away on its own. |
